Can someone please list all or any instrument(s) where the music is read in the bass clef?

Many thanks
Malone
Bassoon!!!
Cello, Double bass, bass guitar, timpani, contra bassoon, tombone, tuba, Euphonium, although, you do have to be careful with brass instruments, they all read treble clef when playing in a brass band... There are probably lots more obscure ones too.

Other obvious ones would be keyboard instruments. And sometimes the French horn delves into the realms of the bass clef...

*Bass clarinets don't read bass clef.

Also the pedal part of organ music.

Thanks Malone and Maggie May.

Is the bassoon suitable for a 9 year old or does the player need to have a certain height/hand size? We need a suitable 2nd instrument to replace the hated piano.
hello_cello
it might be a little big for a 9 year old.

As long as the child is at least the same height as an assembled bassoon, they could play a full-size instrument.

Hand size is an issue, but not an insurmountable one. There are bassoons with modified keyword for players with small hands - which also includes adults with small hands. Bassoons with this modified keywork are called short reach instruments. (Strictly speaking it is possible to have any bassoon keywork altered to suit the players hands).

If the 9 year old is very small for their age, there is an instrument called a tenoroon - essentially a smaller bassoon pitched a fourth higher. It uses standard bassoon fingerings, but they keyboard part of any accompaniment has to be transposed up a fourth in order to be in tune with the instrument. Howarth of London are the best people to contact about all sizes of bassoons and they have very reasonable rental prices too.

I teach a pair of primary sevens so they are about 10 and they both play the mini bassoon and manage fine. Normal bassoon was far too big!!

I didnt start bassoon until I was 14 and have always been very tall. Dependant on the students height I would say she may need to wait a year or two. You could always try her out if you're desperate?

Does she have experience of other woodwind instruments? I think the bassoon is the type of instrument that is best played after having played another woodwind. I suggest the clarinet with its similar fingerings in the bottom register if she hasn't already tried that.

Just wondering why a second instrument is essential and why this way of choosing?
Unless the child specially wants to play whatever it is you may get the same problem as you have now with the piano.
