I was wondering what grade people would think In Un'Altra Vita by Ludovico Einaudi would be on piano? I want to play it as one of my pieces on my music A Level course but don't know if it would be too easy or not?

Have you asked your music teacher, they will advice you on this

I don't know which board you are doing, but EdExcel have a list of pieces with allocated grades on their website. Even if you aren't doing EdExcel, it would give you an idea if the piece is on their list. If you use the link below, and then download the Difficulty Level Booklet you'll be able to see.

I would put all Einaudi stuff at grade zero. It's infantile, monotonous rubbish!! wink.gif Sorry! just my opinion

And a perfectly valid opinion it may well be - but not a very constructive comment or one that addresses the question under issue!

Hmm! I think it addresses the question concerning the grade, I rate it at grade 0, not ABRSM grading structure of 1 to 8 I admit but nevertheless perfectly valid. My opinion that Einaudi stuff is rubbish is just that, as you quite correctly say; an opinion.

My guess would be somewhere around grade 4, because I think its probably one of those pieces (like the 1st mvt of the moonlight sonata etc) which is relatively easy to play badly, but a lot harder to play well, so that the emphasis is on the right notes etc.

I don't want to add fuel to the flames, but I agree with StuMac.

Whilst your opinion on Einaudi's music is a valid comment to post, this piece is obviously above 'grade 0' (if there were such a thing) taking into account key signatures involved, co-ordination of hands, chords, rhythm, extent of the keyboard covered etc. so not a very useful comment to make in answer to the OP's question.

I'm not familiar with the piece in question, but having just taken Grade 1, I am sure that it would be too tricky for me to try to play just yet smile.gif
crazy cow
I think most Einaudi stuff is 'graded' around 4/5 ish, I played Le Onde for GCSE and I think this counted as the more difficult, from what I can remember In Un'Altra Vita is harder than this so you may get away with it for AS but probably best to discuss it with your teacher anyway - you need to find a piece that you can easily play well to get the best marks possible for expression etc. whilst still hard enough to not get marks taken away - as no one here has heard you play your teachers are the best ones to advise you, after all the worst they can say is no smile.gif From my fond memories of Edexcel, chosing pieces was quite an individual thing rather than just the difficulty level - you have to find pieces you are really comfortable playing too.

I'd agree that they tend to be around grades 4/5. Some are rather more one way than the other. I think there can sometimes be more to playing them than meets the eye, and they certainly serve a musical purpose, for want of a better term.

A pianist friend of mine played an einaudi piece for her Edexcel A-level and no-one complained. I'm not sure what mark she got. It was coupled with the Brahms G-minor rhapsody so i don't think anyone was going to say she wasn't good enough!

As for monotonous rubbish I think that's a little harsh, monotony has a place within music - how about steve reich's Piano Phase or Four Organs? both excellent pieces but Piano Phase only has one phrase for 20 minutes, and Four Organs one chord change!

Einaudi can be a lot less monotonous than classical period music - oh look, another four bar phrase. Oh My Goodness! it's modulated to the dominant!!!!!!!!!
