Hey

I was wondering if anyone here studied at that RSAMD or anywhere else for that matter, as I am applying for my higher education for next year and was wondering if I could get any views on what it is like to study there in particular.

Im also applying to Glasgow and Napier: I want to do the Bmus.

What kind of things do you do? What is a typical day in a Bmus degree?

If anyone would be kind enough to help me I would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Michael

I'm doing a HND. I did apply to the BEd at RSAMD but I didn't have the theory grades to get in.
Plus I wanted to take my time to gain some extra knowledge and technique before jumping into a degree as I only started playing 3 years ago.
I'm planning to go into third year at Napier.
Glasgow is meant to be really good, so is Strathclyde.
I think Edinburgh is good also but alot of the course is theory based, well I have heard through word of mouth anyway so don't quote me on it lol.

What would you like to do Mickey after your BMus?
I wonder if anyone on the forums does study at the RSAMD blink.gif

well PSL I have a few haha.

I would like to do teaching and session work. And once in my life I would like to play in a west end pit orchestra. But yeah, mostly teaching. What about you?

Its funny you should say that, i have only been playing for a short time too. Around four or five years now.

And Im not sure if anyone studies there, I hope they do: I would love to go there.

Anywho.

Hi micky-d,

I have just finished a Post-grad course in Instrumental Teaching at the RSAMD. But having said that, I have only set foot inside the building once, two days ago, for the award ceremony! It was a pilot distance-learning course for teachers / aspiring teachers in remote areas. I think it's an excellent institution, and its smallish size means a more personalised approach to students. The teaching was also excellent, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I would like to do the same as you, I've had my heart set on teaching for a while now but like you I would also love to get into playing in the west end pit for musicals, like be the MD. Especially playing piano for Wicked, awww *dreams*.

Where do you stay nearest too? Glasgow or Edinburgh? I know people that have came to study from Glasgow to Edinburgha and they have said the travelling is really hard to put up with everyday.

I always felt uneasy about applying to uni/college knowing I had only been playing for a few years but I look at it now that we have reached this level after a few years and that's the most important thing! biggrin.gif

What sort of West End productions would you like to play with?

Oh my goodness: I went to see wicked in the west end a couple of weeks ago, It was amazing smile.gif wub.gif
and I would love to play in any of them haha, my favourites at this moment in time are Les Mis, Wicked, Joseph and Mary Poppins.

and i live nearer Glasgow. I am learning from my sister as she had a flat in Edinburgh for her uni and she said it cost a real sum of money, so I would be Traveling, but as you said, I think I would find it annoying with the getting up early and what not.

Yes I agree with you about that. I think to myself sometimes things such as: "I've only been playing a couple of years compared to other people that will be auditioning." but then I think, if I (and clearly you sound in a similar situation) have achieved this much in so little time, what could I achieve in uni. yeh know?

anyway....
Ill stop rambling and sign off haha, my main aim was to come on and start a post about theory work tongue.gif but this is a much more fun conversation haha.

Haha no problems Micky
Yeah my friend is from Airdrie and the other one from Motherwell and they found that the travelling through was horrible, especially when they didn't get home till late at night or there was bad weather that stopped them coming through. Yeh the prices are really expensive in Edinburgh, mind you everywhere is going up in price in the UK but thats a wholleeeee different topic that I could get started on hehe... blush.gif

How awesome is Wicked???!!!

I'm planning to do Camp America next year in New York to help out at a music camp and I get like a months travelling so that is my first aim, to see Wicked on Broadway. I would LOVE to see Idina Menzel in concert too. My second ambition is to see as many states in America as I can!!! biggrin.gif

Thats the best way to think Micky - You have only been playing for a few years and you have made a wonderful achievement to be able to get this far and to still be so enthusiastic. Thats the way I look at it nowadays anyway.

So have you applied to the RSAMD or is this for next year you are planning?

As you can probably tell from the amount of posts I have been making regarding uni and what not, I really want to get in. Haha. My problem is that I set my self a goal and then don't give up until Ive completed it. I know that is a good thing, but it does cause me some amount of stress sometimes haha.

My favourite is Defying Gravity, above everything else that has got to be the winning song. I have this amazing version of Idina Menzel singing it just with the piano, it's brilliant! biggrin.gif

Well not giving up and setting your self a goal is a good thing as it shows determination and drive and also enthusiasm! biggrin.gif

Aberdeen is fantastic for music.

Now you can do a BA with QTS, so you get a music degree and teaching degree similar to BEd all rolled into one!

And the social life if fantastic! wink.gif

I know someone who has just completed a music degree at Aberdeen - I think with slightly mixed feelings but in the main the experience was a good one.

Hey guys, I'm from Oban and I'm wanting to do music next year, after 6th year. This has been really interesting to read!
I really want to go to Aberdeen because the course there looks amazing, doing both performing and teaching at once. This would be good for me personally because I really can't choose between them!
Does anyone know what the accomodation is like at Aberdeen?
I'll apply for the RSAMD too, definitely. And Edinburgh's the posh place tongue.gif
Where else in Scotland does music degrees?

Sorry I meant to reply to this sooner but kept getting sidetracked lol.

I'm starting the BEd in September, got all my applicant info in today. Now I need to find a decent pic to send them for my matriculation card and get filling in all these forms O_O

If there's anything you want to know about it I'll see what I can do! I know a few people who've done it already and one girl who's going into 2nd year.
