Full Version: Any Tips For Understanding And Interpretting "compound Duple"

I seem to be alright at clapping the rhythm and know to call it 2 time in the exam, I'm worried about the sight reading bit though as apparently they can and probably will give me a piece in that time signature. Perhaps if anyone could direct me to a few other songs sung in that time signature it might help me? As obviously I'm used to hearing songs in 3/4 and 4/4 but 6/8 is new to me.

Grade 2 syllabus says (in pdf file on AB site)

SINGING AT SIGHT: a short test in a major key, in simple time, with a simple accompaniment played by the
examiner. See paragraph k on page 75.

So no compound duple. You may get an aural test in 6/8 but you should be able to feel 2 beats per bar easily.

That's good news, but my teacher seems to think otherwise and she's given me several pieces in 6/8 to practice, I can do the Aural tests where I have to clap in 2 or 3 time so I'm not too worried about that.

For six eight, think two beats, each one subdivided into three.

So each bar would go 'liverpool - everton' 'liverpool-everton' a bit like triplets played in two four.

Hope that's helpful.
