Umm, I think the title says it all! I have lots of summer dresses, but it's forecast to be a bit rainy and cold tomorrow. I also have a few v posh dresses, that are very formal... One I love is white with a black sash, and black butterflies, and is strapless, I love it, but I'd guess it's a bit too posh, do you think?

I'm very lost, I know I'll wear some black heels that I like, but otherwise, no idea! My singing teacher says to dress for a performance, but what kind of performance?

Any help is appreciated!
It's for tomorrow, so thanks!

this is going to sound vague, Lucky, but I'd say wear something you look good in (most things probably) and make sure also that you feel comfortable too.
That is very important.
Although it's a performance, it's kind of a concert performance because you are singing different songs.
Smart but not too formal.

Above all, feel comfortable with it.

Your "butterfly" dress sounds lovely, but if it's going to be rainy and a bit cold, you might end up shivering in it. Also, you don't want to feel self-conscious in whatever you wear, and if you're thinking it's a bit too posh, it sounds as if it might make you feel self-conscious.

For my exam a couple of weeks ago, I was torn between wearing a "posh frock" and smart-but-not-too-posh - in the end I chose the latter (knee-length black skirt and coloured top) and I was glad I hadn't gone "posh".

So I would recommend wearing something that you feel physically comfortable in; not self-conscious in; and maybe something with layers so that you can take off or put on, depending on the temperature.

PS. Glad you got to your lesson in the end by the sound of it - if I lived in East Yorkshire instead of West Yorkshire, I'd have given you a lift myself biggrin.gif

biggrin.gif Thanks, well I got a taxi and my dad paid half... but if I was broke he'd probably have paid for all of it, so it wasn't as much of a disaster as I'd thought!

You may be right about the dress... I love it so much, but I'll be totally paranoid that people are laughing at me for getting so dressed up... *ponders*

Sorry but I am not very good at this sort of thing. I'm sure you will look great in most things.
methinks that for singing you must wear somthing you feel comfortable in but I cant help anymore then that.
good luck.

Ben again.

Where I was, nobody else was dressed up, and there were quite a few children around who were just wearing school clothes, and I would have stood out like a sore thumb. There are times when you want to be the belle of the ball and can carry it off, but for me, an exam isn't one of those occasions - I feel as if it's better to do everything you can to feel comfortable in every sense, not give yourself something else to worry about. On the other hand, it might take your mind off your exam! biggrin.gif

Good luck for tomorrow!

A grade 7 exam isn't really like a concert. You won't be judged on what you wear at all, but it often helps to wear something which makes you feel you are giving a performance, i.e. not the usual jeans and top that you might be in on an average day.

I think Skylark has the right idea - wear something posh enough to make you feel smart and ready to give of your best, but not so posh that you feel over dressed and selfconscious.

Remember to breathe properly - that may sound obvious, but when you're nervous it's very easy to forget and take shallow little breaths that ruin your sound and breath control. I'm sure it will go very well, because everyone on the forums will be rooting for you.

And the very best of luck! goodLuck.gif

it's a good point... take your time too... don't be flustered into anything... keep control, be confident...

and of course good luck

I don't think I've ever done an exam in anything other than school uniform! My advice is go for something that you feel comfortable in, and don't go for a tight or strapless top as this constricts your breathing and could therefore hinder your overall performance. Hope this helps.

I never thought what you wore was important in a music exam =|
I've worn school uniform for all but 2 exams I think..
Just wear something you feel comfortable in, and don't feel silly in.

A friend of mine sang at a concert where one of the soloists wore a strapless top. The singers were all a bit surprised at how immobile her arms were. They discovered afterwards that the zip on the top had broken!
