Who do you like to listen to? Since Russian violin pedagogue Zakhar Bron is no longer in Russia, it's a bit hard to say who's Russian and who isn't (after all, he taught young Japanese violinist Daishin Kashimoto), but anyway...

Among contemporary violinists we have Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Maxim Fedotov, Eduard Grach, Ilya Gringolts, Alexandr Bulov, Philippe Quint, Galina Barinova, Irina Bochkova, Julia Krasko...Leonid Kogan? Any comments?

Cello: Boris Andrianov...others?

I don't know if nationality is important any more, but it's surely worth turning our eyes away from the media-machine of the English-speaking music world occasionally.

Viohazard suddenly woke up to the fact that there are Russian violinists out there (for totally ignoble reasons related to parodies of old songs...). He's taken by the fact that a surprising number of young men violinists are from Russia. (He also quite likes the fact that Russians speak Russian, and is determined to learn it...). He was taught by a Russian teacher briefly in New Zealand, and appreciated her teaching, but somehow didn't connect Russia with violins even then!

Are you counting only alive ones?

In Russian cellists you have to include Slava (Rostropovich) and of course Mischa Maisky.

As well as the obvious wub.gif I like to hear Vadim and Ilya from your list above.

And what about Violists? Bashmet and Maksim Rysanov?

Isn't Mischa Maisky a Latvian?

Indeed he was, and of course Slava has now passed away.

Dmitri Sitkovetsky is a pretty good violinist not yet mentioned.
