In the last few weeks there have been so many threads started about music exams and UCAS (I'm responsible for at least one of them), that I thought I'd write a guide...so here it is...

UCAS Points for Music Exams

IPB Image

NOTE:
i) Most universities do not include ABRSM (or equivalent) grades in their points offers, unless you are planning to do music.

ii) You can enter grades below 6 on the form, its just you don't get points for them.

Filling in the form

If you have music lessons at through school, skip through the first bit!

Click 'Add New College'

IPB Image

Now the screen looks like this:

IPB Image

Unless you go to an extremely well know music school (Purcell etc), you will have to name the school yourself.

Click 'Find'

Type in any random letters, click search (hopefully no matches will be found, otherwise try more random letters!)

IPB Image

Then click on 'My school / centre is not listed here'

You will now be back to the screen you started at, but can type in the school box.

Type into the school name box: 'Private [your instrument] Tuition - [your teacher's name]'

Centre Number: 'XXXX'

Enter the date you started lessons with your teacher.

Unless you've stopped lessons, leave the '...and finish?' bit blank (it writes 'start date - present' on the form).

Attendance: part-time

Select that you will receive qualifications from the school.

So having done that, your form should look something like this...

Click 'Save'

Now you should be right back to where you started, except you have a school added:

Click 'Add Qualifications'

Theory Exams

Find 'Music Qualification - Graded Theory (ABRSM and equivalent)' in the list

Enter the month and year you took the exam.

Choose the exam board, if you did exams with a board not on the list (I couldn't think of any, but they must exist...), write it in the box.

Select the grade you did.

NOTE:
i) You can only enter one grade for theory, so pick the one that you'd get most points for (eg. choose G6 distinction over grade 7 pass).

ii) You can enter grades below grade 6, but dont points.

For mark, I put in the actual number of marks I got, although other people wrote P/M/D. I think it probably wants the mark but either would probably do.

Now your form looks like this:

IPB Image

Click 'save'

Now you're back to the main education screen again and it looks like this:

Practical Exams

Click 'add qualifications'

select ' Music Qualification - Graded Practical (ABRSM and equivalent)'

You get to a screen much like the one for theory. Fill it out as before, but choose your instrument from the list. If you play an obscure instrument not on the list, write it in the box next to the list.

These are the instruments on the list (each can be counted separately):

When you've filled in this, click 'save' or 'save and add similar' to enter more instruments.

Now the starting screen looks like this:

FINALLY, the ordeal is over!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get points for more than one practical subject?
Yes, you get points for each instrument for which you have passed grade 6 or above on. So, yes if you have grade 8 distinction in all 35 instruments you will have 2625 points laugh.gif

How many UCAS points do I have from my music exams?
See table above rolleyes.gif

I have private music lessons, what do i put for school/college?
See above

Is it possible to enter diplomas on the form?
I haven't asked UCAS, but next to the grade drop down list is an 'other' box, you could type in DipABRSM etc here.

Well, there it is, i hope it is useful. smile.gif If there is anything you think needs adding, or if there are any more questions you would like answering, say, and I'll do my best to answer them, or find answers.

Well done, Sarah - I'm sure this will be very useful for future UCAS applicants. smile.gif

This isn't strictly related to music exams, but points for all qualifications can be found here.

thanks alot..............

Yes. Excellent instructions.

Perhaps UCAS will now redesign this appalling set of on-line forms - as your excellent article show up just how bad it is.

There are experts in Human/Computer interaction. They should try employing one. It is not something the average programmer is very good at.

I think its probably quite easy to fill out if you are a *completely normal* person (but then I doubt anyone actually is!!) I've had it particularly bad because I'm so 'unnormal' (my address is too long to fit on the lines etc, and it doesnt help that everything my school tells me (like the music exams stuff), if i check with ucas, i found out is wrong dry.gif)

Ahh that was really helpful

but one question.. i'm going to do my grade 7 in November, but then I hope to do my grade 8 in the summer.. I've put grade 7 as pending for the date but can i also say that i'm going to take my grade 8 in june??
This is probably more important to me as i want to study music at uni and have to show the people that i am actully working on grade 8 and hope to get it before i get to uni... or should i just write this within my personal statement??

I think, as long as you're sure you will have taken it (and got a result) by the time A level results come out, you should be fine to put it on the form.

Oh no, on second thoughts, you're only allowed to put each instrument once, so i guess its up to you whether you choose to put 7 or 8.

When I did my UCAS form I used the ABRSM Glasgow Centre Number - G027 I think. I can't remember what I put in for the name of the institution, maybe ABRSM Glasgow or something. I was concerned that ABRSM wouldn't be able to tell UCAS about my results if I didn't have the right information, but it really isn't obvious what the right information is.

I thought because I was applying to Music that I might get an ABRSM condition, and UCAS says it automatically gets the results from ABRSM, but it turned out that none of the unis cared all that much. I still don't know if the results I had pending got updated from it - seems unlikely that ABRSM and UCAS can communicate with each other when they hold so little infomation on the forms.

Thanks for this post and good luck to anyone doing UCAS this year!

Thank you very much for this post: I mentioned to my guidance teacher the fact that I got points for doing ABRSM music exam and he had no idea how I would put this into the UCAS forms (when I eventually do it!!!) laugh.gif. biggrin.gif

I'd put 7, because for a music course they would audition you anyway and can see what standard you are.
