hi there everyone!!

I am about to begin teaching grade 5 theory for the first time, and must say i am abit worried.

It has been 21 years since i took it, and a few things have changed so i have ordered a tutor book which will hopefully guild me. But is there any helpful tips anyone could share?

thanks

Read the syllabus and look through quite a few past papers. That way you will see what additional information is needed that isn't totally covered in MTIP.

Think of a number of ways to explain the same idea so that if someone doesn't understand what you're talking about, you'll have something else up your sleeve.

When I started teaching it, it helped me to devise a mind map for the whole syllabus, as well as explanation/revision sheets for most of the topics.

Enjoy!

Think of ways to demonstrate the concepts practically on your instrument. Theory lessons can be awfully 'dry' - it is good to be able to apply the concepts in a practical context. I like to sit at the piano some of the time and use a tiny toy keyboard to have on the table while we are writing.

I'd work through the Music Theory in Practice books, from Grade 1 if you haven't already. Firstly it will bring it all back to you. Secondly you will have a ready-made answer book if you ever should need it.
Any thing you're not sure of, look up, read and read, or post on here!
Then work through past papers and get the most recent ones with the model answers available. Don't be tempted to look at the model answers until you've worked the paper!
It will all come flooding back to you. It's just a case of jogging your memory!
