Hi folks,

I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but I'm hopeless at using the search function (although I did discover some interesting but largely irrelevant threads using it!)

I'm looking for repertoire to go between grade 2 and 3 - position changes are fine (1st and 3rd are secure, but others could do some work). I would really like a compilation book of various composers/styles, but am happy to take any suggestions smile.gif

Thanks!

suzuki book 4 has very very beautiful music including Seitz Concerto, Vivaldi A minor concerto, but I'm not very familiar with the ABRSM violin grading, I'm not sure but I suspect it is a little bit beyond grade 3.

There is also a book by Barbara Barber, volume 1 that has some nice pieces in there (Kuchler violin concerto)

If those are too hard, I think the pieces in Suzuki book 3 maybe perfect, but for the most part are in first position.

Thanks Fayewolf.

I'm not sure about ABRSM grading either - I use AMEB (australian syllabus), but I assumed it would be about the same level.

I'll investigate those books - thanks!

For a bit of fun and light relief, and which will keep you in tunes for a long time to come, try Jigs Reels and Hornpipes , compiled by Edward Huws Jones.

Or you could learn the real versions of those tunes, instead of the watered-down, simplified classical versions... wink.gif

Of course there's always the danger that you might then end up playing exclusively trad (that's what happened to me).

As for Suzuki 4 - I think there's a fair chance it's a good way above ABRSM 3.

Thanks for your replies, Minstrel and Rosfrog!

I've actually inherited quite a few collections of folk music (both recordings and scores) so that has always been a healthy part of my repertoire.

I should get to a music shop in the next few days, so I'll check out Suzuki 3. Unfortunately the local music shops aren't keeping much music in stock, other than exam repertoire these days so it's difficult to browse sad.gif
