First glance at the List B exam pieces for Grade 8 seems to indicate that more "Presto/Prestissimo" movements have been chosen than the usual lot of "Allegro"s.

How will this impact your recommendations of exam pieces choice of your students?

My old fingers seem to have enough challenges with Allegro....perhaps young fingers can handle both equally well?

Arthur Rubinstein's and Vladimir Horowitz's old fingers (to mention only the two most famous) seemed capable of impressive Presto. Look up the videos of an aged Horowitz playing his own arrangements of Bizet, or playing Scriabin's Vers du Flamme

Wilhelm Kempff still played the last movement of the "Mooonlight" sonata pretty well at the age of 85 despite the additional handicap of Parkinson's disease.

It is skill and practice ... not age

Not to mention the fact that tempo markings, as dynamics, are relative and subjective (unless there's an actual metronome mark, of course).

Yes you are right , I hadnt noticed, but the last movment of Beethoven Op10 No1 isnt too taxing.
Its interesting they've switched form first to last movement on Mozart K332. The last movement certainly appears harder than the first, but once youve got the hang of the semiquaver bits I think is a fair choice for Gr 8. I'd certainly prefer these to the Beethoven Op14 No 1, I dont like E Major much ! The Clementi B flat my daughter played for Gr 8 (all of it!) in mid 90's, now you only have to do first movement.

The Haydn in Ab major is OK too, despite the Presto marking.

Thanks for your feedback!

The Op. 10. No. 1 of Beethoven is music that grabs me by the neck and makes my toes shiver. Perhaps I have a mental block about ever being able to play such beautiful music (well).

Handel c minor fugue
Mozart c minor sonata opening movement
Liszt Consolation no 3 in Db

Not a Presto in sight. However both technically and musically that would make a beautiful yet demanding programme.
