I've made a list of forumites I know are doing a diploma this week:

Joueur - Monday 14th, piano

Vulpus rex - Tuesday 15th, clarinet

cellocase - Saturday 19th, cello?

jo0425 - piano

Scaramouche - Friday 18th, saxophone

Muddy Paws

Very best of luck to you all, and if there's anyone else out there whom I've missed, please let us know so we can think of you this week. goodLuck.gif

And much good luck from me too - I'm due to be there next session... (gulp!)

Many thanks, folks!

I'll take it retrospectively because my ordeal was last week. There may still be time for some kind of warp shift to make the recording sound better than the reality, but I doubt it!

Nothing for it but to await the outcome for good or ill.

I'll add my best wishes here for those yet to do theirs.

Thanks for best wishes, and in particular to the very observant Berkshiremum who got me onto her list! I hope your son's went/will go well.

Exam was this morning and am afraid it was almost a repeat of last time - the nerves got hold of me and it wasn't a successful recital. Having said that it was still a little bit better than last time which isn't saying much as I did fail the recital quite badly but there was some improvement which I am deriving small comfort from!

Viva went well I think, as I can generally talk for Britain in these situations. I passed it last time and was re-sitting it out of choice as was the only bit of the exam I enjoyed.

I have made a careful note this evening of the questions I was asked during the viva, is there somewhere to post these (indeed am I allowed to whilst the exam week is still on) for the future reference of anyone else who would like a feel for the type of question that can come up?

I am now going to watch guilt-free, rubbish television for the first time in months and my boyfriend can now relax without me sqwuaking away in the background!

Sorry you feel the recital didn't go well; it must be doubly disappointing when you were retaking. sad.gif Maybe you will have done better than you think, though; it's hard to know what the examiners are thinking. Don't download the form for next time just yet! biggrin.gif

Interesting that you liked the viva part. I don't know whether you should post the questions or not - maybe after this week, so that people thinking of doing one in December would have an idea?

In case anyone missed this in the other thread, Miri is doing her piano diploma tomorrow. Best of luck, Miri, and do let us know how it goes. goodLuck.gif

Good plan.

In terms of general advice though for your son (just read somewhere else that this is the bit which he seems more worried about), I am absolutely confident from having done the viva twice that the examiners are much, much more interested in finding out what you do know about your subject rather than trying to expose what you don't.

There was one particular question today that I didn't immediately know the answer to, but felt that the examiner recognised this just as immediately and followed up with really good prompting questions. Even then I'm not sure I gave the answer she was initially looking for but I felt the questions were structured to make sure I got an opportunity to demonstrate as much knowledge as possible about the general area in which she was interested.

Thanks very much for this. His current strategy is to try to lead the conversation towards the areas he knows most about, so that he can show off what he knows rather than worrying about what he doesn't. Perhaps this will work if, as you say, they want to find out what you know.

He seemed quite confident today, having done a lot more reading and put the final touches to his programme notes, so I hope it goes OK for him. He's looking forward to the recital now, as he loves any excuse to perform to an audience - even if it's only two examiners! Just hope the nerves don't kick in too badly on Thursday.

My DipABRSM teaching seemed to go ok, thanks. Now the long wait for results! Thanks for all the good wishes.

When they say 8 weeks, do they mean exactly 8 weeks from the date the exam was taken, or is it more of a vague estimate?

It is normally at least 8 weeks. Your exam appointment letter should have had a note on it along the lines of "we're not sending out results until the week of XXX"
