Full Version: What Cello To Buy?!

I have been looking at buying a cello- suitable for someone who is grade 6 and over standard. I know it is best to go and play the instrument yourself, but as it is not for me, for a surprise, this is not possible. I also know that the price will change how good an instrument it is but i would like to hear if anyone has any recommendations for a nice, decent cello?! I have no idea where to start! thanks!

A lovely thought to buy as a surprise but seriously not a good idea especially for someone of grade 6+.
My husband bought me a cello as a surprise Xmas pressie a few years ago, and I do think now that it is a very good instrument (for my level) but it's been to a luthier and had a lot of adjustments to improve it. It would be better to get an instrument on approval or go somewhere and try several (even if they didn't know it was going to be bought for them)

Totally agree with the post above. Not a good idea to buy someone of that standard a cello as a surprise. The choice of an instrument is so personal. Why not make a beautiful card as a representation of it with the promise to come along and pay for the purchase? (I trust you are aware how much a good cello costs!)
