I started on the cornet at secondary school, but didn't really like it. I was then offered the chance to do a woodwind instrument and opted for the oboe, but the teacher they had didn't teach oboe, so I was given the choice between clarinet and flute. I opted for flute. I found it quite easy and started doing my exams on it, but haven't really played regularly since I was 18 (I'm now 38).

I don't really like playing it now and I've become bored with it. I'm not a member of any groups or an orchestra so there's no real incentive to keep practising.

I've recently taken up the viola with a view to joining an orchestra once I'm good enough (which may be a while), but I'm determined to get there biggrin.gif Strings are more of a challenge than a lot of instruments and I'm really enjoying it, even though my brain seizes up sometimes! wacko.gif

I also played the piano at college and got my Grade 3. We've just recently bought a piano and I'm going to start playing again.

I have two kids and I like to encourage them to take an interest in music. I'd never force them to play anything, I just hope that they hear me practising and perhaps would like to try for themselves. My eldest is learing the viola too.

The alto clef has a claim to be the most fundamental clef (along with tenor), having middle C in the middle of it. According to the Grove Dictionary of Music, the treble clef became common only in the 15th C., whereas the C clefs (soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and new baritone) and the F clefs (old baritone and bass) were used in the 11th C. Bach wrote for his normal four part vocal choir in soprano, alto, tenor* and bass clefs.

* the C clef sign on the second line, not the G-clef with an 8 under it: that's a 19th C. monstrosity.
