Any ideas for duets for lyrical tenor and soprano...not music theatre(loads for that) Doing a concert with someone I've not sung with before and would love some fresh ideas.
Thanks

I've already recommended these for somebody recently...Mendelssohn wrote a whole book of duets (many originally for Victoria and Albert!) which are really good.

Ernest Chausson wrote a couple of fab duets which I've done with a tenor (though it could also be 2 sops) - they're seriously challenging!

If you want slightly lighter stuff, don't forget the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, as well as some of the other operettas (Strauss, Offenbach).

Jay Althouse arranged a whole book of folk songs for 2 voices. Not sure if it's still in print but they are really nice arrangements.

I must make a list of duets - I usually seem to be the one who suggests things when this question comes up! biggrin.gif

Hard Times by Stephen Foster, worth a try.

Hi Country girl,

there is a whole book of Mendelssohn duets...just did a Google on it and here it is:

By Felix Mendelssohn. Edited by Friedlaender. For 2 high voices (high, medium), piano. (Text Language: German). Published by C.F. Peters. (P01747)
Contents:
Ich wollt, meine Lieb ergšsse sich Mendelssohn
Abschiedslied der Zugvšgel Mendelssohn
Gru§ Mendelssohn
Herbstlied Mendelssohn
Volkslied Mendelssohn
Maiglšckchen und die BlŸmelein Mendelssohn
Sonntagsmorgen Mendelssohn
Das €hrenfeld Mendelssohn
Lied aus Ruy Blas Mendelssohn
Wie kann ich froh und lustig sein Mendelssohn
Abendlied Mendelssohn
Wasserfahrt Mendelssohn
Suleika und Hatem Mendelssohn
Aus Psalm 95 Mendelssohn
Aus dem Lobgesang Mendelssohn
Aus "Elias" Mendelssohn
Aus der Motette Opus 39 No. 3 Mendelssohn
Aus Athalia Mendelssohn
Aus der "Hochzeit des Camacho" Mendelssohn

Some of the ones at the end are really for two female voices (eg the Elijah and the Lobgesang extracts) but many of the others, as I said before, were for Victoria & Albert, so M/F voices go well.

I've done quite a few of them. Personal favourite is the Volkslied, but if you do that don't sing it in German - the original words were by our own wee Robbie Burns and got translated later!

Abendlied is another good one, so is Maiglockchen und die Blumelein (can't do umlauts), and so is...well you get the idea!

Try Schubertline too. There are quite a few duets there and the transpose feature may be useful if the keys don't suit.
