Did anyone else see Shanties and Sea Songs with Gareth Malone on BBC4 this week? It was fascinating.

I saw it some time ago when it was first aired. Agree - fascinating - we must be one of the 'worst' countries in the world for not being familiar with our folk music - which IS our history, our character...

I found some of the songs in this show very familiar as I sang them at Sunday school or at primary school. I suppose I was lucky that way.

On BBC2 now is "Being Alice" documentary on the making of the new Royal Ballet production of Alice in Wonderland.

Includes interview with the composer. Very interesting. Worth a watch on i-player...assume it will be up there at some point. smile.gif

Just watched the ballet that followed. I thought it was a-mazing (might be a pun there somewhere!). The Red Queen of Hearts was superb! Best ballet performance I've seen on TV for ages. Hope it will be available on i-player so I can catch up on the documentary smile.gif

I had the house to myself and enjoyed watching the ballet too! smile.gif Agree the Red Queen was excellent.

7.30 tonight BBC4 Programme about choral music of Part and Goretzki (Sacred Music Series)

I saw this the first time round and am still trying to find a recording of Part's As the Deer Pants. My dad is going on a Baltic cruise this summer so I think I'll task him with the job!

Oh, I wish you hadn't just typed that (or I hadn't just read it). It reminded me of being amazed, at the age of about seven, when going into church where my Dad was the organist, to hear his choir singing the hymn "as pants the hart", I could not fot the life of me think why they were singing about men's undies!

tee hee I still remember a friend of mine coming out of church having hysterics as her daughter turned to her and said "Why are we singing about pants, mummy?"
