Programme about Brendel is on beeb 2 now piano.gif

I thought it was on tonight at 11.20 on BBC2 ! Have I missed it ? (sorry dont have a newspaper to hand)

So it is! I couldn't give it my full attention last night so I'll enjoy watching it properly tonight, it looked really good and they seemed to show quite a lot of him playing as well as talking wub.gif
DaisyChain
Last nights programme was more of a biography- speaking to Brendel and his family about how he came into music etc. A very good programme, but I struggled with his accent sometimes! blink.gif

Tonights programme focuses on his playing, which includes Mozart among others. Well worth watching probably. smile.gif
fsharpminor
Ah I see it was both nights ! Having just read his essays (see earlier thread), it will be particularly interesting to me. Missed last nights though. Anyway I'll be tucked up in the Weetwood Hotel tonight !

Renee Fleming is on for about an hour tonight, talking about her musical career. Channel 4, 12.05 midnight to 1.10am.

A couple I have picked out for next week :-

Tuesday 3rd March
21.25 SkyArts 2 'Homage to Ravel'

Friday 6th March 7.30 BBC4 'Debussy and Monet - partners in art'

Did anyone else hear Music to Drive to on Radio 4 yesterday? (It's available for the next six days in the UK).

I enjoyed the story about the Metro that did a somersault on the motorway and landed the right way up with Beethoven's 5th accompanying the whole event.

Apparently there was a programme on BBC Radio 4 (sorry, not TV) about composers with bi-polar disorder (Schumann for example). I wish I'd heard it. Did anyone happen to catch it?

Above link goes to the 'listen again' page for the programme I believe you're talking about Floss. It's available for another 6 days as from today (Wednesday 4th Feb). smile.gif

The whole series was excellent, wasn't it? Well worth taking the time to listen again if you can.

I heard it and loved the programme - that story was incredible wasn't it?

Sorry I missed posting info re the programme on Andre Previn last night, he is 80 today. There may be a repeat of it soon, but it was worth watching

Next Friday there is a performance of Haydns 'Creation' on BBC4.

I missed about the first 15 minutes of this - what was discussed then?

It sadly isn't on ITV's version of iPlayer sad.gif

It was mainly introducing the three Choirs being used in the programme. They spoke to the conductors and members of the choirs to get their views about singing Messiah, and what it meant to them.

Hopefully it will be repeated again... mellow.gif

Aaah OK, thanks DC.

I'm sure it will be shown again sometime, maybe next Easter, or something like that (though that's quite a long time to wait...)

I couldn't manage to watch it .

Who were the choirs? I'll guess at Huddersfield, Halifax and Harrogate Choral Socs (I was in the latter in the 70's).

Huddersfield is correct, the other two choirs were the Keighley Vocal Union and The Sacred Wing, from Leeds.

Keighley Vocal Union, my home town choir !! I was never in it though I know plenty of people who were at one time.

As an ex member of the Hudds Choral, the programme annoyed me a bit.... notleast due to references to 'THE Messiah'! It didn't go in depth around the history of the piece, but was more a selection of 'vox pops' about what it's like to sing it...

For those not interested in the Eurovision Song contest, there's a programme on BBC2 at 8.20.."The Birth Of British Music". It's presented by Charles Hazlewood ( wub.gif ). The subject this week is Handel. It's on for the next two weeks, I believe. smile.gif
guilmant
See the other thread on Bill Bailey about my experiments with downloading on iPlayer, as I downloaded the Purcell programme in this series last week. It was excellent, musically and as a documentary so I'm looking forward to catching up on the Handel one. INterestingly, last week's on Purcell is the only one on a British composer. Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn are the other three progs.

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I think he's great...to look at and at presenting programmes like this. He did a very good series a couple of years ago (possibly a bit longer) about Beethoven. Paul Rhys played the role of Beethoven very well too. wub.gif

Well, one woman's meat (as it were) ..but - Charles Hazlewood?? [i] eek.gif argh.gif Is the man ever pleased with himself?

A little more Handel (Purcell etc) and a little less CH would have been extremely welcome. Can't stand his Proms presentations either. But at least they didn't use Alan Titchmarsh.
fsharpminor
Quite honestly I'm getting fed up of seening CH, he pops up everywhere and is far too full of his own importance.
I enjoyed the Handel program much more than the Purcell.
We've got Haydn next week and Mendelssohn the following week, but I may not be able to catch them.

An unexpected treat! Today's countryfile program is a Suffolk special and contains a short segment about Britten's home at Aldeburgh. It starts five to ten minutes into:

Here's a new 2 part documentary coming up i've just heard about on Radio 3:

BBC Four Saturday 21.30 & Sunday 21.00

'How to be a composer'

Journalist, critic and self-confessed music addict Paul Morley embarks on a year-long pursuit to the heart of his obsession.

Morley begins a year of intense lessons and tutoring from one the most prestigious music schools in the world, the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he joins the composition department as an undergraduate student.

This is the first time Morley has been back in education since the age of 16, and it is by no means an easy year as he feels his way through his first lessons on rhythm and notation before finally composing his own music for an ensemble of young virtuoso musicians.

Might be worth a look! biggrin.gif

*lol*

Yes - it was Cynthia Jolly, who is the auntie of Chris Jolly, the publisher of Jolly Phonics and Jolly Music! She lived in Hungary in the 40s and 50s and was one of Kodály's inner circle...

Ah - I THINK they might have had clips of the wonderful Aurin girls singing??

I MUST find time to listen to it tomorrow!

I didi enjoy the Vienna Phil concert. Apart from not understanding the titles of the pieces and what the conductor said.

Also I did not understand a lot of the conductors hand gestures, certainly not what i am used to in any orchestra I have played in.

Yeah, in orchestras I play in the conductor will always have to work fairly hard to get what he desires than that of a conductor confucting a world famous pro orchestra.
