Full Version: Cadences In Minor Key

I just started looking at Grade 6 aural (I play the piano), and am quite startled by the leap from Grade 5. Other than the sight-singing to accompaniment which freaks me out, I am very concerned about my inability to distinguish cadences in minor keys.

It's nothing tough, just perfect and imperfect, which is exactly what I am really upset about. They all sound perfect to me. I can name cadences very well, as long as they are in the major key. But I cannot seem to hear the cadence when the piece is in minor! snow.gif

Does anyone have online trainers that include cadences in the minor key? I went to good-ear.com, but it seems to give me major keys, which I have no problems with.

Hilfe hilfe! argh.gif

I've looked for some online sites and had no luck.. sorry sad.gif

But, if your struggling with the perfect and imperfect cadences why don't you play some to yourself on the piano so your ears can here the difference? And keep repeating this but in different minor keys, it should help but require patience!

Ohh and that sightsinging - I know its horrible! But it only counts for a small part of the overall mark

The Perfect one will end on a minor chord and the imperfect on a major. Playing some is an excellent idea.

The tonic chord is played once before the phrase. Try to catch the tonic note.

If you remember what the tonic note is, it is not hard to tell whether the last chord is a I or V.

If it's a I chord, then the cadence is perfect.
If it's a V chord, then the cadence is imperfect.

You can do the same for major and minor.
