My 14-year-old daughter's top finger joints click when she bends them after playing the clarinet. This happens particularly after playing semiquavers. They click many times during practice, which is uncomfortable, but doesn't cause pain. They've also started clicking after playing the piano. We think her fingers are slightly double-jointed as they can bend a bit backwards. Has anyone experienced this or know whether it is a problem?

Oooo, i have that! Except it's with my little finger after I've been playing the flute. It hurts in my case but I've been playing the flute for most of my life so I've got used to it. It happens with my top finger when i play clarinet as well but there we go... blush.gif

I know for a fact that I do have double jointed fingers as they all bend back more than 90 degrees, if that makes sense...

And just in case it helps, I'm 15 so pretty much the same age as your daughter smile.gif

I have clicky fingers too! I can make my nuckles click, as well as my toes! I have really double jointed fingers than can bend all the way back, and i also have hitchhikers thumb, where my thumbs can bend backwards more than 100 degrees!
I was told by my parents friend (I think shes a physiopherapist, or something along those lines that involve bending people and fixing pains and injuries!?), and she said that it's nothing to worry about, and wont lead to arthritus or anything, and the clicking noise is just little pockets of gas (which is supposed to be there) popping, and making a noise!
It shouldn't cause arthritus, but if you keep clicking your fingers a lot in odd ways, it can lead to RSI (repetitive strain injury), which can hurt!

Yeah RSI is bad. My advice? Don't keep on doing Rubik's Cubes. They are so addictive and are my way of calming nerves. As I speed cube, my wrist movements are always the same so I end up with very painful wrists which prevent me from playing flute or piano sad.gif Ah well...

In my family - thumbs like that are known as Cameron thumbs - great comparisons when there is a family gathering. One even got in a magazine - my brother was able to recognise himself in a photo of the after rugby game bath!

I get clicking with the top joint in my little fingers, but not all the time. I did used to play the clarinet but haven't in a while.

The only thing I find uncomfortable about it is the sound it makes, it doesn't cause any actual pain. I guess try some cod liver oil supplements, isn't that supposed to help ease joints?

My fingers don't really click when I play the piano/flute, it's my wrists that annoy me!
Plus when they click, it's a bit painful and restricts my wrist movement..
And when I play the flute, it kinda distorts both wrists into an uncomfortable position.. do any other flute players find this difficult :/

I have a bendy thumb too laugh.gif Not as much as 100 degrees though, just 90-ish tongue.gif
