I'm just getting a new clarinet but i don't know which brand. Yamaha(650), Buffet (E13) or Leblanc ( Concerto or sonata) Has anyone got any ideas.

All the clarinets you mention are good. It's a question of which you prefer - sound, key position, etc - so you are the only one who can choose. Best to go and try them out if you can rather than just buy one online.

Have fun choosing. smile.gif

Not really. They're all good clarinets.

It's important to feel comfortable with the keywork. Most of the sound quality will come from you, your embouchure, your experience, the mouthpiece, reed and barrel - and some say the ligature!

But it's important for the clarinet to fit your hands. My most comfortable clarinet is a Hanson. My very best clarinet in terms of sound is an old Buffet R13 with low E/Bb (ie a bit longer).

When I play in a concert, I use the Buffet. I'm one of many and the music is easy. But for an exam, I'd use the Hanson.

Is it possible for you to go and try the clarinets? Take your mouthpiece and barrel and some music that you find difficult to play without squeaking or making mistakes.

Which feels best?

Posted the same question myself in July (17 or 18th I think) Do a search for "Upgrading My Clarinet" and you should find it. Also had a related thread called Clarinet Comparrisons - What do you think? search using my user name if necessary and you'll find it. (I got fantastic advice. Thanks all!) Got a Buffet E13 in the end. My follow up thread was called "My lovely new clarinet" and that explains why.

Happy choosing. It's sooooo exciting. Please let me know what you get.

Check out reviews here http://www.shwoodwind.co.uk/Reviews/Clarin...maha_YCL650.htm too.
Both the buffet and the yamaha are reviewed.

I went for sound in the end. I was told that Yamahas are always very well made but for sound quality i should look to the French camp. Up to you though. The Yamha was nice too but felt better with the E13.

Can only agree with the above posters : all these are good claris, try all of them, and see which one you like best. smile.gif
