I've been using the same starter books for piano students for years, and thought it would be good to see what books other piano teachers are using. I have a few new starters around age 10. They are already playing fluently in the 5 finger position in the right hand. Usually I'd recommend books such as Ministeps or Lina Ng Piano Book One but I'd be keen to hear what books you'd recommend for a student of this age. Thanks!

Possibilities might be ...
Play Piano (Alan Haughton) (but not the accompanying theory book which has misprints)
Oxford Piano Time book 1
I also like Piano Magic (Jane Sebba), although the format is perhaps a bit young for most 10 year olds. But one of its advantages is that it doesn't glue two thumbs to middle C.

Michael Aaron book One - clearly laid out and not too babyish, a nice steady progression covering the basic keys thoroughly. Just a bit old- fashioned but very well worth a look for your 10yr old beginners!

I use Piano time 1 for kids of that age. They seem to like it and can progress through it quite quickly.

Ok, guess what I'm going to recommend? Yes - Piano Adventures - probably go straight to Book 1 (the red one) if they are already reading (rather than starting at the Primer Book). Many of my 10 year olds (and even older) have enjoyed this series, despite it being a little 'young'. Pedagocically, this series is, to my mind, head and shoulders above the rest on the market, and the material is very attractive. I've been using it for a few years now, and am still enjoying it myself - which can't be said for too many of the other available materials.
