Do any of you know musicians who are also artists..?
or vice versa?
Perhaps a musician who paints ... or an artist who paints musicians?
Someone famous or someone you know personally, or have seen pictures in a gallery?
I'm doing some research and would welcome any thoughts... I know some artists who 'paint' the music they hear and I'm keen to hear if any of you know anyone similar.
Many thanks!

There's a very talented girl (about 20 years old) in our area who went to the Purcell School for sixth form and now studies violin at Vienna conservatoire. She's exhibited paintings at the London Mall galleries and I think at one time had trouble deciding whether to pursue music or art as a career.
I've no idea whether she paints the music she hears though.

My father is an artist and I think I have probably inherited some of his skill but I rarely use it. Funnily enough, the only time I really got into art a bit more was when I was at university and barely played the piano. I think playing the piano fulfills all my artistic/creative desires so I have no need to go down the art route. I think I would though if for some reason I was unable to play the piano...

Wasn't Schoenberg a bit of a dab hand with a paintbrush and easel?
The nearest I come to being an artist is painting the skirting boards

Yes he was, but he stopped to concentrate on his music.
there is a very interesting interview here:

Thanks for all your replies.
I didn't know about Schoenberg's painting and this is really interesting... thanks!

I would call myself neither but I love drawing (and the occasional painting when I'm not too lazy to bring out all the brushes and paints and pots and turp/water and what have you - feeling tired just listing them out

) I'm actually much better at drawing than playing the piano

I do artistry as well. Abstract in gouache and still life in pencil.
I've made very little money from it over the years, but when I left 6th form college I had the option of either going to art college or music college. Chose music as I thought I would make more money out of being able to play the violin than from art. I was correct in that assumption.

Would not call myself an artist, but I did art at school right up to A level, and studied brush painting when I was in the far east. Have always been interested in design, and probably would have done something in that direction if it hadn't been music.

My friend, who accompanies me on piano when I need practise and plays clarinet and sax, also got an A in A-Level art. I don't think she'd call herself an artist, but she has been selling her paintings over summer, and she seems very talented to me.

I was going to say Schoenberg! I have a vague feeling that Kandinsky played music... and several composers (Scriabin?) were synaesthetes ... but I doubt that this helps!

Both Bagpuss and I are quite good at art (although I failed Art 'O' Level the first time round

but she did 'A' Level). She's more hot on design whereas I love life drawing (pencil) and calligraphy

.
One of my ex-students got a place to study for a year at the Kodály Institute in Hungary at the same time that she was offered a place at the Central School of Art. She went to Hungary but I think her heart is really with the art (I was a poet and I didn't know it

!).

That
is very helpful thanks... I'm interested in synaesthesia too and should have mentioned that in the first post. Off to check out Scriabin....
Many thanks for all your stories - it's all really interesting! Keep them coming!
My own story is that I wasn't "allowed" to study art although I was desperate to go to art school. Funnily enough music was a "permitted" career. It's taken a long time but I'm now at art school (as a post-grad) and
loving it
edited to add.... Alfred Brendel is on the checking list too

.. and if anyone is interested here is an artist who 'paints' the music he hears...

John Cage also dabbled in the visual arts...

Cyrilla, you've reminded me that I also studied calligraphy (when I was overseas). Loved it too.

Fab, isn't it? Very calming and relaxing...*zones out*...
Many years ago I once met the Bulgarian violinist Angel Stankov (now leader of the Sofia Quartet) when he was studying in London. He was very keen on painting and showed us lots that he had done -- they were really good.
I've no idea if he still paints, though.
