Hi there guys and girls. I have recently started to learn piano around 2 and half months ago from scratch. Things are going quite well so far. I have managed to learn and memorise all my grade 1 scales, both LH and RH, and I have learnt two of the grade 1 pieces(not polished yet). I am finding most things ok apart from the sight reading, but I know that will come over time and with pleanty of practice. I am using the Paul Harris sight reading books at the moment and I find that helps alot. I will keep you posted of any progress I make, and I am really enjoying learning the piano. All the best for now. smile.gif

Welcome Practicetime. There are quite a few adult learners here. Skylark has recently taken up the piano too.
I did my grade 1 piano last November.
Good Luck.

Wow, nice going.

I had my 5th piano lesson yesterday. I took one *ages* ago in July. My teacher then took the summer holidays off. So I've had 4 the last 4 weeks. I haven't even done half of the grade 1 scales! (Not that I'm in a hurry, but it's nice to push oneself). Let alone any actual pieces of music.

I'm slowly working through the Michael Aaron grade 1 book. So far so good. Just need to find more times to practice - ohh, I have soooo much to work on!

Good luck :-D

Hi there. I did not find learning the scales that easy. I just sat down and repeatedly played the scales both LH and RH day after day untill it sank in. Also after I did learn the scales my teacher pointed out that I was using the wrong fingering decending, so I had to relearn things again which was quite tricky, but I think I am there now. The two pieces that I have learnt from the grade 1 abrsm book are A3 and B1. I still have to work alot on the dynamincs and a little bit on the timming.

That is good progress, and it sounds like you have a good attitude as well. This forum is excellent. There is a huge amount of knowledge here, and friendship and support too.

Hello and welcome to the forums, to both practicetime and Swannie biggrin.gif

Good to hear that you're enjoying the piano. Have a look round here - there's quite a few learner pianists, and a good place to find pianists of all ages and stages is our Viva Piano forum too.

Hi practicetime smile.gif

As Beverley said, I've just started learning too, about the same length of time as you but I'm a long way off you if you're playing exam pieces already! You sound as if you're doing really well!

Look forward to having some piano chat with you and Swannie - and you too Flute Diva and The Old Lady! biggrin.gif

Hi chaps, I find that scales are easier to play if you incorporate some internal beat/rhythm in your head as you do it - I mean play it as it should be, but think of them in a musical way, not just chores. You may find it helps with your fingering as you'll start to think of them as "pieces" to play, rather than scales to "do".

Hope it helps, it does for me.. :-)
