Full Version: What Sort Of Teacher For Practical Muscianship?

Has anyone out there looked for or found a teacher specifically for the practical muscianship exams?

I learnt the 'cello for 5 or 6 years as a teenager but could never 'hear'. My teacher stopped entering me for exams when I acheived 5/18 for my aural at grade 3!

I started having lessons again 3 years ago and play a fair bit and have now acheived my grade 5 but to get 12 for the aural is a triumph for me. Although I finally am much more aware of whether my playing is in tune or not, this is a real handicap to my playing. My teacher has worked on strategies to help me hear and although I'm undoubedly better, I feel so hampered. I got a distinction for my grade 5 theory but oh to get more than a pass for my playing. So I thought that perhaps I would try the practical musicianship exams, starting at grade 1, which is likely to be a huge challenge for me (perversely some of the higher grades have elements that are easier for me: certainly sightreading; probably transposition, and I would like to learn about improvisation, given what I learnt about composition for the theory).

Can anyone suggest do I need a singing teacher (help?!), a piano teacher, a Kolday teacher perhaps?

I've searched the fora and found various strands on practical musicianship but none really seem to address this question.

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't 'hear' at all before I learned music through this way of learning - I'm not brilliant now but a VAST amount better than I was!!

Do please PM me if you'd like to know more about the approach.
