Full Version: Which Diploma Provider?
Forums > ABRSM > Diplomas

Hello all

I would like to enter for my first Diploma in Piano Performance and am looking for advice as to which board is the best to use. Would those candidates who have used ABRSM, Trinity or any other provider be kind enough to share the advantages or disadvantages of their particular provider?

I am currently thinking of following the ABRSM syllabus but am aware that, eg, Trinity offer more localised venues for candidates whereas I believe ABRSM are more centralised. I also believe that Trinity board allows candidates more freedom in the repertoire to be performed. Against this, I have heard that ABRSM diplomas are respected highly but am not sure that Trinity diplomas are equally well respected.

Could candidates please comment on their experience in the above areas?

Thank you.

Trinity and ABRSM diplomas are both equally respected and worthy of that respect, as are diplomas from the LCM.

I think it's basically a case of you studying each of the syllabi, and working out which syllabus you feel more appropriate for you - either in terms of which you think is the most readily achievable or, better still, which will stretch you further and help you to strengthen any weaknesses you may have in areas of that syllabus.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum Gordonian.

I am not going to comment much but want to say that both Trinity and ABRSM are very well regarded.

For a first diploma it might be worth you looking at the London College of Music diplomas also. Their DipLCM is a useful introduction to examinations above grade eight standard.

You got there first HG.

You need to consider the differences between the syllabi and which will allow you to demonstrate your ability better.

eg: Trinity is essentially just a recital, so without the viva and quick study parts that AB has. So would you do better with more performance or a shorter recital and then sight reading and questions about the music.

Trinity also has no pre-requisites for the (non-fellowship) diplomas, which might be a relevant consideration.

Yup, I think that's already been suggested. rolleyes.gif
