Can anyone suggest any good cases that i could buy online? I'm thinking oblong cases, up to the £100 mark. My current case is some rubbish thing off ebay - i think my violin deserves better!!

I quite liked the bobelock cases, though they're slightly over my budget. Does anyone have one?

why do you want an oblong one?

When I picked a case, I picked the one that would protect the instrument best. Have a look at the Gewa concerto cases, although they're not oblong they are gorgeous, velvety lining, and have some stuff (I'm not sure what) to help prtect the instrument. Suspension or something. They are used by a lot of professional players. Full size violin one for ~£90. http://www.thestringzone.co.uk/categories/...in-case-by-gewa
You can get them in oblong, but they're about ~£150/160

These are definately the best ones that I've found, i have them for violin and viola and would definitely not swap them.

The problem is, you can definitely get an oblong for less that 100, but its not going to be as good quality, and for me protecting the instrument was the most important thing.

I do REALLY like that case... but would i be able to fit my shoulder rest in there? (a maple mach one rest)
maya3
it does actually fit really easily, you put the two 'legs' either side of the pegs of the violin and it fits very flatly on top. if it's very curved, it fits sideways by the pegs as well.

personally i think that case is the way to go, its light and pretty (as stupid as it sounds i really wanted a case that looked nice and i loveld the blue velvety stuff inside)

I may go for that case smile.gif
Thanks for suggesting it - i'd never have considered a shaped case otherwise! I have to admit i'd thought they wouldn't look very professional or something =/ But that case really does look nice smile.gif It's also a better option for me - a very small girl of about 5ft laugh.gif Considering i drag my violin round with me every day i may aswell get a light, small one!

I'm just a little bit worried about the shoulder rest thing. As you said it can fit in easily which is great biggrin.gif But... what if mine doesn't? Or also will it be knocking around on my violin if i've squeezed it in round the pegs? Unless i wrap it in a cloth *thinks* It is a very curved shoulder rest but it is quite small (although my teacher thinks otherwise - she's always like 'your shoulder rest is massive!' but i think it's tiny o_O)

I always have a bag with me (obviously) so if worst comes to worst i could just put my shoulder rest in my bag but i'd prefer for everything to fit in my case

I think i'm gonna buy it biggrin.gif

-btw, what shoulder rest do you have?
maya3
the violin has a padded thing in the lid which stops the violin moving about, so it wouldn't be knocking against the neck. Also, if it didn't fit, that would be really stupid for a violin case maker to make a case that didn't fit a shoulder rest.

And yes, they do look very professional smile.gif and it would probably be better for your height as they're very light.

I have a Bonmusica shoulder rest and it won't even fit into my oblong violin case... sad.gif

Put it in a sock!

mines a wolf secundo shoulder rest. Even the viola one which is much larger fits fine.

To be fair, the bonmusica rests are pretty massive laugh.gif I don't think one of those would fit in my oblong case either =/ Good rests though smile.gif I almost chose one (good job i didn't now though or i definately wouldn't be buying this case haha)

I suspect that case is all fur coat and no.... as my gran used to say. Often the mass produced cases are very good at looking great, but not so solid in construction. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the shaped one. If you absolutely must have an oblong one, check out something that's well made, like BAM.

Also, if it didn't fit, that would be really stupid for a violin case maker to make a case that didn't fit a shoulder rest.

But it does happen! I have a crescent-shaped case, and the shoulder rest (Kun) fits neatly upside-down underneath the neck of the instrument, with its own velcro strap to hold it in place. And the whole outfit is lighter than the average oblong case.

I genuinelly can't choose now =| Definately leaning towards the shaped one. And, atleast having no storage space will stop me from hoarding stupid amounts of stuff in my case... i mean... no-one NEEDS 4 spare sets of strings, several rosins... 4 pencils... 4 cloths... need i go on? laugh.gif
maya3
^ very true, its better for your back having a lighter case as well.

I'm currently using this case: http://www.chamberlainmusic.com/ProductDet...D=SAA%2DVL%2DGB

It's perfect for what I need at the moment for taking to and fro from college - easy to carry, not too heavy, room to fit everything in, including space for music in the top pocket, plus it's fairly durable. Obviously, the quality isn't going to be as good as a more expensive one, but it's obviously been designed sensibly by someone who actually knows what is needed in a case.
However, the amount of space means I do tend to have a fair amount of junk in it tongue.gif

Hi just a quick question. I’m looking for a new case for my daughters violin, I have been looking at ProTec cases, anyone had any experience of these? We were looking at an oblong one, as there is no room for her shoulder rest in the shaped case we have

I found this but cant find any were in the UK that sells it
http://www.protecmusic.com/items.aspx?Prod...subCategoryID=7

But I have found a shop which sells other protect cases.

Hi! I have a purple JTL case - they come in oblong too!!
I like the case, well made and ####!!!

That purple case is awesome. One guy at string group broke his violin so had to borrow his sister's which was in one of those cases laugh.gif

I FINALLY made up my mind and ordered the oblong one from arc verona as i really don't think i could give up all the storage space, i just need to know that i have everything i could ever possibly need in my case, and the shaped one had about enough room for one block of rosin and some strings >_< Although i do have to admit that it looks really good. But im not sure i'd like to put my shoulder rest amoungst the neck of my violin too. The description of the oblong case sounded as though it had everything the shaped case had and possibly more in the ways of protecting the instrument too - fiberglass shell, suspension, etc. I shall see when it comes =]
