Hi!

At the moment, I am at the stage where the school has started talking about choosing A Level choices and I have to admit, I really don't know what to choose. I am pretty certain about 3 I am going to pick, but then I don't know whether to take Music A Level. I don't know what I want to be (at all) and although I enjoy most of GCSE Music, I am finding the composition a bit tricky. (That could be because it is the first one we have done).

So, what do you do on A Level Music? Is there a lot of composition?

I am Grade 7 flute and have passed Grade 5 theory (if that helps.)

I am sorry but I don't know what exam board it would be on.

Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

Thanks, Nicki

yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes!! you should definitely do it!

im no good at composition and i hate it but i still enjoy the course.the amount of comp i think will depend on the board you are with.

if you are grade 7 flute, performance shouldnt be a problem, i did mine when i was grade 5 and still got 88/90 woohoo!!

so YES do A-level music!LOL

My son has just started A level music, and he didn't even do GCSE and so it was a brave decision. But he loves it, especially all the ensemble playing. He is always practising at home for something at college!

go for it! it's the best one I'm doing! And if you don't like it, drop it after AS

i think it depends what other subjects you're doing. A lot of the people in my music class are doing sciences as their other subjects and are planning to study medicine/biochemistry etc at university. Music is a nice contrast and the music classes are a nice break for them! If you want to go to music college you don't really need A level music, though you do need it if you want to study music at university. The work isn't much more difficult than it was at GCSE, and you're definitely a high enough standard for the performance part. One slight problem about A level music is that some universities/employers don't see it as 'academic' a subject as maths or english or something. Do think carefully about whether you want to do it or not though- I initially chose not to do it, and then regretted it so much I'm having to take it as an extra, and believe me, 5 A levels is no fun! tongue.gif
