Actually I don't think I would like it for Christmas - I don't like the wood.

But if Father Christmas is listening then I wouldn't mind I wouldn't mind a brand new Marigaux oboe and matching Cor smile.gif .

I'll just settle for the perfect reed.

The everlasting perfect reed biggrin.gif ?

That lookes nice but I'd rather have the black and silver unless the tulipwood has a nicer tone. If I could afford it, I would pay a little extra to have the keys goldplated. wub.gif Brown+gold is much better than brown+silver.

I would LOVE it as a christmas present though. Not going to happen in real life sad.gif a large supply of good reeds would be nice though smile.gif

What a fabulous set....it looks beautiful wub.gif

A large supply of good reeds would be fantastic...keep dreaming! But I would love the bits and pieces to start making my own reeds, I've got a knife and plaque but that's about all. smile.gif

I'm sure Emsoboe would love it!! She might though prefer the Bass Oboe that she thought about trying last Sunday, and then realised she had a sore throat sad.gif

Well done Steven...I wondered if this would find its way here...

Strange how tastes vary though...the Americans are jumping up and down with excitement about this pair but we eruopeans seem to prefer the Grenadila and Silver combination...I have to say it's not to my liking and as Liz said it would look better with Gold keywork...somehow the grain is a tad too straight for my liking...Tulip wood...a generic hardwood...not overly thrilling...Coco bolo is far prettier...Violetwood even more so.

The price is about right if they were brand new but this is secondhand and even though it doesn't look like it has been used much if at all it's still a staggering amount of money...I wonder why the owner has parted with it...The wood does not have quite such a large projection as Grenadila which maybe the reason...

I am sure somone will snap it up in the USA...their taste is very different from ours,as is their tone.

Nevertheless its a stunning pair and looks very impressive...so if anyone has a spare $18,500 approx £13,500 and its your cup of tea then its the perfect gift for ones self...

I do love them, and let out a small squeak of delight on seeing them... but echo the sentiment about having the keys gold plated...

They're surely a status buy...

Yes I agree with you, very much an American thing and built to appeal as such...and good for Loree for tapping into it...Looks very impressive and that appeals by the bucket load to the USA...I do wonder how many non Grenadila Oboes and Cor Anglais sell here in Europe, there must be a market for them and it can't all be in the USA...I do have a freind who has a Cocobolo Oboe and adores it (Howarth XL) its stunning and she plays it beautifully...I don't detect any real substantial difference in her tone or projection but she is an exceptional player...this is the same player who can single tongue at incredible speed and with remarkable flexibility...really its quite sickening ill.gif I am rapidly going right off her I can tell you laugh.gif

In truth some people like the lighter tone and weight that instruments like this have...so its horses for courses..

They're the sort of thing that would be bought without being tried by someone with too much money and not enough musicality! I also imagine them being bought by a rich doubler, is happy to have 'the best' of ech instrument without necessarily worrying how they sound.

Give me something for a fraction of the price, which sounds exceptional any day.

Mind you, they might yet sound exceptional!

Am I the only person who thinks gold keywork is a bit too bling, then? huh.gif

I see the point of them being gold in that it would be a better match but could be considered tacky.
