Full Version: Setting Up A Violin

Hi, Im taking my 'new' violin to be re set up on Monday and Im worried. I love the sound of it as it is but have been told by the Luthier that this is the original 1927 set up and the soundpost is in the wrong place and the bridge is too low and something with the fingerboard too??? My teacher agrees with the bridge and is reccomending Evah strings. I have no knowledge at all on strings, setting up etc but this violin is alive and bright, if not a bit edgy in the upper register but deep and yummy in the lower register. Its got Dominants on it at the moment with a pirastro chromcor E.
When I said to the Luthier I liked the sound as it is and didnt want it to change, he said he didnt want to touch it then. The violin needs the work, especially the bridge as it feels like Im catching both the A and E at times (my teacher finds the same). The Luthier said he will improve the sound, so is there anything you would recomend me to ask for or say as I will be mortified if I dont like it when I get it back or should I just leave him too it, afterall he is the expert sad.gif

get the opinion of 2 luthiers just to make sure what they are saying is true.

If it needs the work and the price is reasonable then get it done. I reckon it will enhance the violin some way or other.
