I think it's some version of Ave Maria? I recognise it and i absolutely love it, possibly the most beautiful piece i've ever heard I'd love to attempt to play it or even to be able to hear a full version of it, but i don't know what to look for. Does anyone know where i could find a recording?

I hadn't listened to the piece in a while, then i just did and thought 'i wish i knew exactly what it was... i'll ask everyone on the forums!' But thought it felt familiar as i was typing it out...

It's basically Schubert, though ISTR he wrote it for piano, and Gounod did something to it later. You can watch Menuhin playing it here.
