Hi everyone,
I am to play in a school music competiton in around 7 weeks time and need to start preparing a piece before it gets too late.
The piece has to be solo and can include a piano accompanyment.
I was considering chanson de matin, salut d'amour or hungarian dance no 2. Has anyone got any experiance of playing these peices or have any other suggestions?
The piece cant be longer than 3:30 minutes.

Yes, my daughter played Salut d'amour last year for her NCO under 13's audition. It is a lovely piece. The Hungarian Dance No 2 is also great. Another suggestion might be the Monti Czardas; a well known piece I know, but still flashy and good for school concerts.

Sorry, not a violinist.
But is there a piece out of those we you enjoy playing more or shows off your playing more than the others? Will you have time to practise with an accompanist?
Good luck!

I believe I get a couple of sessions with the accompanist. So not much but everyone managed fine last year, no muck ups from the accompanist. However my piece had not piano part so I have no experiance with the accompanist that the school get in for the competition.
Unfortunately my violin teacher who I am not seeing until school starts again, does not have a paino in his flat nor do I have one in my house so wherever we decide to have my lessons, we can't practice with the accompanyment. For that matter I have never asked him if he can actually play the paino. I just presumeall violin teachers have some knowledge of paino.
I will look into the Monti Czardas but my first impression is that it may be too difficult in the time period with all my other commitments but I can't rule it out until I've seen a score of it. Also maybe a little too long.

I agree that the Czardas is a great one for concerts, really showy etc. and a lot of the difficult sounding bits aren't as hard as they sound. It's a lot of fun - for the player and listener

If you have 7 weeks though it may be too late to learn it from scratch =/ Could give it a go though

Another beautiful piece is 'Adoration' from the grade 7 list

I'm sure you probably know of it
I love hungarian dance no.2 too

it sounds really impressive

I adore adoration and i thought of it immediately, it is just that it is a bit long unfortunately. Does adoration have any repeats I could omit?
There is a song I discovered, called never meant to belong, I believe it is from the film bleach. Can't find the composer anywhere! who composed this piece?

Too long probably.
Maybe investigate Kreisler miniatures. They're technically not too hard but really cute pieces which any audience appreciates and have relatively easy piano parts. If your sound is a particular strength and you have a good sense of timing they could be winners. Also maybe Tchaikovsky souvenir?
If you can get hold of it, there's a great collection of pieces arranged by Heifetz which includes all difficulty levels and they all sound harder than they are

Maybe your teacher would have it. There would definitely be something in there.

Can't send BenChanViolin a message as he has enabled friend block. Locks like I may just have to go with anothe piece. I need the paino part seperate to violin part and I am don't wat to have a print out of a pdf file as my score on the night! The page turns would be a nightmare!
I am going for Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky: Melodie Op.42 unless anyone can pursuade me otherwise before I get to a music store on sunday morning.

Ok as far as having the piano and violin parts separate (this is going to sound very very stupid) couldn't you print off 2 copies and on one of them, cut the violin lines off and stick them onto a separate sheet? I've done it in desperate circumstances and though it's a faff it does work!
I would recommend either Salut d'Amour or Chanson de Matin, having played both, I played Chanson de Matin for my NCO Main Orchestra audition a couple of years ago and loved it, but also love the other, so torn there!
Hope this helps!

OK, I have gone to wallington librabry in Sutton, which is a little of the way from where I live, but have managed to obtain the melody by Tchaikovsky.
This is now my chosen piece and I have I believe, 6 weeks tommorow to have it perfected
