Full Version: What Can I Do About My Musically Bigoted Brother!

Hello.

Have any of ever had this problem?

My older brother always has to knock whatever music I listen to. I don't listen to most stuff kids my age would but whether it's acker bilk, pete fountain, elton john, dr. john, jools Holland, aerosmith, it's either too old, or "war time jazz".

Then he says "you're supposed to be a musician, listen to all music". I listen to a lot, all he does is listen to club music! what am I supposed to do, listen to the amazing harmonies and melodies in that?

Have you ever had a problem with people not leaving you and your music alone tongue.gif

You listen to whatever you fancy listening to smile.gif that's your choice and you should feel free to make it smile.gif
I'm often criticised and judged because I listen to lots of genres of music...for some reason being a fan of both Mozart and Stone Sour and lots of other varied things in between is a problem for some people...maybe because I refuse to sit in an "I only listen to one type of music and that is the best" box...
For me, if I want to listen to classical, I'm going to listen to classical, if I'm in the mood for jazz/rock/metal/pop/country/etc...I'm going to listen...and I don't see why I shouldn't...I can appreciate the differences and similarities in each and I enjoy each for different reasons, in different settings, at different times, with different people and when I'm in different moods...but most importantly I get something out of each of them, that is personal and important to me...for example, I really enjoyed sitting with my grandad discussing and debating the Christmas countdown on Classic FM on Christmas day...yet I also enjoy going to alternative nights in town with my friends...and I'm certain I was the loudest person screaming at the Led Zeppelin gig last December, well, apart from my dad of course lol...each setting appropriate and enjoyable for totally different reasons!
Anyway....mini rant over! (sorry everyone, it just really gets me when people "assume" that one type of music is superior over another without justification, merely based on what they personally prefer, and that therefore the other person(s) involved must be a certain way or type of person for listening to it...) listen to what you enjoy and don't let anyone tell you that's wrong/bad/stupid smile.gif

I never said anything is wrong with it, I meant I don't find it very exciting...unless I'm at a club...not on my chair in my room on Sunday afternoon tongue.gif

Ignore him! We're never all going to agree on what is and what isn't good music. What matters is that you enjoy what you listen to; presumably he enjoys what he listens to too? It is a question of mutual respect.

No.

He listens to particular music to make him look cooler, haha!

My brothers knock my music all the time. I listen to mostly classical music, but they listen to people like i think they're called "slipnot" and "paramore", and other people who just scream (sorry, i'm being as bad as them!).

Most people know i listen to classical music, and i dont care if they think i'm weird or a loser for liking it, and i dont make it private that i like classical music! sometimes i sit there listening to my MP3 going "wooh", and everyone asks me what i'm listening to, i'm and still there dancing, and say something like "its Rachmaninov!!!!", and they're all like "WHO!?!?", and they all think i'm weird, but i find it fantasically funny to do stuff like that, because i dont care what they think!

It might all change! my brother (17) used to turn up his nose at anything classical, but I heard him singing Schumann songs the other day! biggrin.gif and now he denies ever having said he didn't like classical music! rolleyes.gif

Sorry, i don't know the difference between the bands, paramore just happens to be one of the bands i've heard them mention, maybe paramore doesnt scream, but the rest of the bands are utter rubbish! smile.gif

Paramore is great. If their singer ever screams, it's type nice sounding screaming. Slipknot's is not.

Anywaaay.. will-132 I say just blast your music out loud! There must be a reason why those 'oldies' are still popular today smile.gif I don't see the dance, chav music still being around in a few decades..

for a thread started to complain about people slamming music there's a lot of it going on!
I love Slipknot ph34r.gif i can see why its not to everyone's taste but they're very competent musicians - there's a lot more "content" from a musical point of view in a slipknot song than in the a lot of other music IMHO.

Clearly you are too mature for people of the same chronological age as yourself. You just need some older friends that understand you better.

I worked with Slipknot at several venues on their latest UK and they are outstanding instrumentalists with an unrivalled stage presence, and thoroughly professional (behind-the-scenes wink.gif ) too. And I was lucky enough to have a bass masterclass with Paul Gray, and he was a great teacher! I'm quite a fan of their music now smile.gif

But I admit their style is not for everyones taste...not by a long shot... tongue.gif

smile.gif My brother also used to question what I listen to. I used to listen to lots of oldies and even some japanese enka. But now, he is the enka fan... haha...

I have some anecdotes about choice of music to share too. I am one of those who isn't updated with the latest pop.

Lately I have to listen to arias and art songs, and that has brought about some snores and wide eyes from friends and colleagues. Here are some of our conversations:

Friend: Any new songs you can bluetooth over?
Me: Eh, I'm not so updated. You want some classical instrumental? *Playing Hungarian Dance*
Friend: Why do you listen to something so OLD??? How old are you!!!
Me: Well, this is a classic. I have even older stuff... centuries old! *Randomly playing some baroque-style art song*
Friend: Stop it! Give me something new!
(Finally I found a japanese pop that is more than 10 years old. Is that really considered NEW?)

Friend: Why do the sopranos have to sing like that? They sound scary...
Me: Ehh... maybe that is a way not to hurt their throats? It's just a way of singing.
Friend: Well, they simply don't sound right! Why don't they just sing naturally?

Colleague: So you listen to pop music too?
Me: Yes. I listen to both classic and pop, some rock at times, some R&B...
Colleague: Oh, I thought classical piano students abhor the mainstream music.

As a female, I am even expected to listen to songs from female artistes. I was quite out of place at a recent karaoke session:

Friend: OK, just skip this song. Think the guy who chose it has left. *Click*
Me: WAIT!!! It's mine...
Friend: Huh? Wong Lee Hom? That's a guy's song right?

Friend: So what do you listen to?
Me: Hmm, I like male artistes. Jacky Cheung, JJ Lim, Khalil Fong, Aska Yang...
Friend: Oh, no female artistes? Like Fish Leung etc?
Me: Well, only occasionally...

Listen to the music that moves you - doesn't matter how it moves you.

I've met people who listen to certain styles of music or go to see opera, ballet or anything for that matter, just so they can tell people that they have - this mentality is a mystery to me!! - it belies a culture that is more interested in how people think they are peceived, intstead of what they really enjoy - listen to what makes you happy - there ain't nothing else to life in the end!!

Ok, this is getting worse with my brother!

This is not meant to offend anyone!

He now knocks me for playing blues and says that because I'm white I can't play boogie or blues or anything fun mad.gif

Come on, Pete Fountain and Dr. John were brought up in New Orleans and that's why they can play it!

I'm not even supposed to listen to Aerosmith now because they're too old! what a joke...
sarah123
This all sounds very familiar to me smile.gif

I have a similar situation with my brother, who is into Red Hot Chili Peppers etc and nothing else. He spends his entire time saying how all I listen to is a load of rubbish without stopping to think that I listen to all the same stuff as him, just mixed in with everything else as well.

If people are going to be so closed-minded, it is their loss!
Maizie
Your brother has clearly found something very effective to tease you with! Siblings are like this. You just have to ignore'em and hope you get on better when you've both grown-up a bit more biggrin.gif
Katie Maeve
If the power of the contentment you get from listening to your music, is greater than the power of irritation your brother has over you, then either you are a weaker person than you could be or you are listening to the wrong music. wacko.gif
However, if you enjoy the music you listen to you should be able to find the power to ignore his comments. biggrin.gif

Luckily for me, I was brought up in a household where Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Clementi were played just as much as the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Led Zepplin and Bob Dylan. But as well as Classical music and pop music, I was given a healthy dose of traditional music from all over the world. My dad travelled a lot and brought back music from Morroco, China, Russia, Argentina, Romania and many other countries.

If you really want to change his ways, I suggest you introduce him slowly to other types of music. Try playing music close to his own tastes first then gradually going further away from it. Until he's used to hearing all sorts of music. musicMakers.gif

Haha.

Now Acker Bilk is 'garden centre music', hehe

Or perhaps just find other 17 year olds that like classical music - there are thousands! you don't need to find "more mature" people per se. Mad Tom, I think you underestimate 17 year olds! wink.gif

haha, my little brother used to be like this, he hated being forced to go to concerts or the ballet or anything because it was "boring old classical music.) Having grown up a little bit though, (he's 16, almost 17 now) and though he'll never admit it, he quite enjoys some classical music, as well as really enjoying being able to identify the differences between eras and composers...doing GCSE music not only made him more tolerant, but because it gave him greater understanding, he feels a bit more like he's allowed to be a part of the "classical world". I often wander past his door and hear him listening to "classical" music or world music now! I wonder whether many people, simply find it hard to identify with beccause they don't have enough understanding, and whether that makes them defensive about attempting to listen at all? (sorry that was a bit of a ramble, not sure if it made much sense!) blink.gif

I have an obsession with choral music.
I listen to it on youtube, then search for free sheet music on the internet. failing that, i grab a pen and paper and write it out listening to it again.
then i go and try to sing it.
if i like it i try and persuade our choirmaster to let us do it.
I'm 13.
And, just in case anyone hasn't heard it, try listening to "the little road to bethlehem" by michael head. it is the best thing i've ever heard. especially the version by paul dutton.
wink.gif

but, i do have other music on my phone too.
