I started piano because of my mother... and family pressures... I was 4 years old.
Not understanding how far grade 8 really was... i agreed to play piano until I completed all the grades.
I WAS CONNED
But. Last year, this year... grade 7 & 8, i've started only now to appreciate music. But. Today, I got my grade 8 results, saying I've passed! ... My contract is complete! I can stop piano!... but I want to continue playing for myself... NO I must do diploma... in my case, my answer is... my parents.

Because I love to play my viola, I love to make beautiful music on my viola, I love my viola, music and more specifically; the viola is my entire life. Two weeks without being able to play, made me feel empty, although I was having the best time of my life on a school trip, there was always a part of me that didn't feel full. How corny does that sound?

It's a real shame that your parents are pushing you to do exams if you don't enjoy them and that exams are spoiling your enjoyment of playing. Still it's good to see that you're not being put off playing all together by it and still enjoy actually playing (if not for exams). Think about your future: when you leave home you'll be able to play for your own enjoyment without the pressure of having to do exams if you don't want to. For now you could always try talking to your teacher about it: maybe if you feel under too much pressure they could convince your parents to at least give you longer between exams even if you can't stop them altogether.

In answer to your question I play because I enjoy it; I just enjoy doing it and want to be good at it, that's about all really.

I actually do it for three of the options: - Because I love it
- Helps my future
- And is something to do

I started playing flute aged 10 (i think) and liked it at first, but then hated it, and wanted to give it up, wasn't allowed; then I loved it, then I hated it because I didnt like my new teacher, then she relaxed a bit and I loved it again.
Carried on...
Then aged 13/14 I took up the piano, loved it ever since (my teacher is also my mums friends daughter... But shes great)
Carried on...
Then when I was 14/15 I had this urge to learn the violin, but found it awful... (sorry any violinists out there...!) I really want to give it up, but im not allowed... mad.gif

But I wouldn't want a future in music... Piano and flute are just hobbies!

It's my hobby, and I get satisfaction from learning new music. Also it gives me a chance to meet lots of interesting people.

And perhaps I love it too...? smile.gif

I always wanted to play the clarinet, because my mum playes in orchestras and things, and id seen them. She said i could only play an instrument that i could learn at school, so when i had the chance, i took up the violin, which lead to the piano and the saxophone and lots and lots more music! Now i just love it!

I started playing violin at age 9 and although i liked playing it i wasn't that bothered about grades and practicing, just playing out and watching tv like any other 9 year old. So when i went to high school and saw the older kids playing i was like "i wanna be like them," and so 7 years later i am grade 7/8 standard and absolutely love playing my violin. im so glad i stuck it out for the first few years (and that my parents let me lol!) and i would never give it up for the world. Plus ive had the most fun EVER on the music tours i have been on! Determination and a love of music is all you need!

I love playing my instruments so much. I think that I like it so much because to me I actually found something that I am really good at. I've tried dance, softball, it doesn't work to well, but I picked up so quick on the clarinet that I just kept picking up new instruments, so that now I play like 14 different instruments. It is definatly something to do, its all I do lol I'll definatly continue onto college doing something that has to do with music.
