I just thought I would say hello.

I couldn't find this thread initially when I joined the forum and have already posted in the Woodwind section.
I love the sound of the clarinet, and was determined that one day I would buy one and learn to play it. Yesterday I bought one from Hanson a Model HE-3V MKIII clarinet, and when it arrives in a couple of days I shall start the process of learning how to play it.
The only musical instrument that I have ever played, [I still have it, and play it occasionally] it's a Harmonica, and that I only play by ear, so I must also learn to read music. I anticipate a long learning curve.

This is a bit about us.
We live in a town just outside Colchester and moved here to be near to one of my main lifetime hobbies, sailing. The house we live in was built back in the late 18th century. We spent four years converting it to be energy-efficient, and as eco-friendly as possible.
We sail a Sadler 34 [a sailing sloop] from here on the East Coast. Our cruising area is slightly limited by my wife working, but we do get as far as the Channel Islands, France, Belgium and Holland. It is a sport that I have been doing for most of my life, and Caroline my wife for the last 20 or so years. My other interests are, cooking, watercolour painting, running, and karate. A bit like sailing cooking has dominated most of my life, from a young boy to present-day.

I saw your other thread but didn't contribute because I didn't think I could add anything useful. I joined the forum after I'd been learning clarinet as an adult for around 18 months and like me, I'm sure you'll find it extremely informative. Hope you enjoy your clarinet and look forward to seeing you around

How are you getting on? wonder where I will be in i8 months

A superficial answer is that I'm up to Grade 4 of the ABRSM exams and am now consolidating. A more complete answer is that taking up the clarinet was the start of a complete revolution to my life, which is still evolving and I've no idea where it will lead but each twist and turn is along a path which I had never dreamt of. Some of the diversions have petered out, although they were pleasant while they lasted. Bit by bit I see the path broadening out, and there are lots of fascinating people joining it all the time. The views from the path are thought-provoking, challenging, exciting, and many of the people who I meet along the way add a new dimension to the journey. Some of them travel along the path with me, sometimes just for a short way, others are still with me and we enjoy each others' company, and I see others up ahead who one day we will catch up with. Most of the time the sun shines, but sometimes the sky clouds over, and occasionally there's a thunderstorm. It's easy to trip and stumble when the weather turns, but there's always someone to give you a helping hand until you find your feet again. In short, it's the most incredible journey I've ever embarked upon
