Hi,

I was wondering whether it was possible to do the ABRSM Jazz Sax exam entirely on the soprano sax? I know some people have done it on both tenor and soprano but when doing the exam do you have to 'major' on either the alto or the tenor?

Cheers.

I asked this question recently about Baritone Sax. If you give AB a ring there is a special code to include on the entry form.

What grade are you doing?

My pupil did Grade 5 Jazz sax on soprano and I didn't ask for special permission! smile.gif

I don't really know!! I've never done a grade on the sax before (being principally a clarinetist) but would like to do some jazz grades. Do the jazz grades run parallel in standard with normal exams? Again I have heard snippets that jazz piano is a lot harder than standard piano but does this apply for wind?

I've never done a music exam in my life laugh.gif I can tell you my daughter's perception. Jazz Piano is different to classical and it doesn't seem as easy as the Jazz wind. My daughter was G5 FLute when she started messing about with the Jazz exams. She found the head very easy and opted for G3, the improvisation was the tricky bit. I don't think they are meant to be easier than classical and I suppose whether you find them trickier or easier depends on how much you understand about improvising. They are certainly fun!!

It's just a code not special permission as such unless of course I've been misinformed. I hope they are not expecting her to be doing Jazz on a different Baritone laugh.gif

Okay - sorry, worded that incorrectly! I didn't get a code either though.

I rang them just before Christmas as I thought the Music Service might raise a question as the syllabus only states Alto and Tenor. I knew from hillyb that it was possible to do Bari or Sop. I really only wanted to reassure the admin staff that it was ok. At that point I was told I needed a code and what it was. Hope the info is correct or daughter is about to be entered for something entirely different rolleyes.gif Maybe it's something that's changed recently perhaps as more people enter, but I was assured the examiner needed to know which Sax she was taking it on.
