11:30. Think positive vibes folks.

It went ok. The pieces were fine. The aural tests weren't too good and I'll need to improve it if I get a second audition ph34r.gif Scales were fine but I need to concentrate on the tone and play with a full tone I would play the pieces with.

When will you hear?

What did you think of the school?

I'm sure you did much better than you think with the aural and scales. Hope you enjoyed your day.

I don't even know what is Chethams.

Is it a Department Store? Sounds like one.

I assume it's a music school. Does it have a good reputation?

Just don't get nervous at the interview.

The oboe's that stick thing you hold in your hands. The piano's the one you sit at. Don't mix them up or you'll look silly!

Steve (Been watching too many Carry on films!)

PS Good luck!

Really!! You've never heard of Chethams School of Music? You are joking? Either that or you're an alien from some far flung planet.

I haven't heard of it either - I've heard of the Menhuin School, though. Nor am I an alien from a far-flung planet. Going somewhat off-topic, as someone very perceptively remarked, "Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it."

Yay! I got through to the main audition. The main audition is in april/may so I'll only have a tiny rest after grade 8 ph34r.gif Other good news is that the consultation lesson with the oboe teacher there is the same day as the audition so I can make up my mind about if it's a good place in the one day and not have to go up for a lesson separately like Wells.

Good luck. My daughter was at Chets, first study recorder, second study piano, third study oboe, but we removed her recently (read on...). Her oboe teacher was absolutely lovely, and my daughter loved her, so if it's the same one I am sure you will have a very positive trial lesson.
One thing I will say...I notice from your info that you are from Cornwall. Manchester is a LONG way away, and although you are significantly older than my daughter we found the four hour journey to and from Manchester that we regularly had to undertake was very hard on all of our family, and this distance was the major reason that we decided that Chets was not the school for her. Most of the pupils there that we came into contact with were either part-time boarders or day pupils, living within an hour's radius of the school, and this seemed to be the best arrangement.
You are in a very enviable position having (potentially) two offers to consider, and would just ask you to think carefully over all the options, as Wells is clearly much closer to your home.
Good luck, and I am sure you will make the right decision.

Great news, lizbun! Best of luck with your main audition. smile.gif
STRINGMUM
Well done on getting to the next round.
Don't worry about the distance from home, while lower down the school most are reasonably local but by the time it gets to the GCSE years the school has a good smattering of international students and uk students who travel quite a distance who can't go home too often.
In the end you just have to choose what's best for you regardless of other people's experiences. Can you try a couple of days at both to get a feel for them?
JinglyB
I think Stringmum has rather misinterpreted my comments. I'm not saying that the distance factor is a reason not to choose Chets, I was merely flagging up to you an angle that you may not yet have considered for when you make your decision.

I hope that the offer from Chets comes, it certainly sounds very promising for you, and if you choose Chets, for whatever reasons then you'll make it work. Good luck

I got my main audition on the 22nd of April... that's 2 weeks to get the pieces I'm doing to a good standard and I only started looking at them seriously after grade 8 and only played them for fun a few times before that. ph34r.gif Manageable though.

Thanks. It's mainly because I thought of the idea of auditioning and even though my teacher said it was a good idea she still could teach me 'till music college. I know I need to go to a different teacher to improve further than if she taught me though and that's what I feel bad about because she's a good teacher.

Good luck. Just took my daughter back to Chets and it is a lovely environment. I'm sure you'll do very well and it is an excellent place to be if you want lots of music.
Minstrel
Good luck, be the best that you can be....

...and do it especially FOR your current teachers who, I'm certain, will want you to have the best chance to fulfill your potential - not only through instrumental music lessons but also through all the other specialist classes and activities that only a music specialist school can provide.

I'm sure that, whenever you leave your current teachers, whether it is now or in a couple of years time when you go on to further education, you and your current teachers will stay in touch. It's only natural to worry a little about what you might be leaving behind. Just remember that you will not be saying goodbye to them for ever, and think, instead of how you will have the opportunity to meet and learn from more wonderful people as well.

Enjoy the day,
M
