Hello
Before I think about auditioning, I want to know how likely I would be to get into Chethams.
I play three instruments; Piano, Violin and Alto Saxophone.
I've been playing piano for around eight years, although I had around two years where my teacher was ill and I made little progress. In July I took grade six and passed with a merit, which was less than I was expecting.
I started saxophone around four years ago in which time I have progressed quickly; I am taking my grade six this term following two distinctions in grade 4 (139 marks) and five (132 marks). I play for the Wolverhampton Youth Wind Orchestra too.
I have been playing the violin for around five years and am also taking grade six this term. In grade five I achieved the highest strings mark in wolverhampton for grade five and won the Ralph Bassett Prize for my achievement. I play for Wolverhampton Music School's Concert Orchestra. I started the year as a second violin but was moved up to the firsts section after two weeks.
I also sing for the choir of St. Peter's collegiate church, Wolverhampton. I have my Bishop's award with Distinction, and I also got a distinction for my Deans exam. I am a cantoris treble, and one of the senior members. We practise once a week and have a service most sundays, and I sometimes do solos such as Dyson in F.
I am passionate about music and I definetley want a career in it when I leave school. I practise for around forty minutes a day on each instrument. I would love to be able to do more but I have to fit in schoolwork which is a trial. I go to a single ### selective state grammar school where we get a lot of work. I play in senior band and senior strings, sing for the choir and I often play piano in assemblies and I have accompanied the junior strings group in the concert. I have also contributed solos towards concerts and services at school.
I love playing romantic and twentieth century piano music, preferably slower more expressive pieces. I have recently discovered a composer named Yiruma whose music I adore, and will be performing at the Dudley Music Festival in march. I also love music by Chopin and Wagener, and have recently developed a love for Beethoven.
On my violin I like playing two types of music. I love dramatic pieces by composers such as Bohm. I am playing his Sarabande in G minor for my grade six exam and it is one of the nicest things I have ever played. I also love Baroque style pieces and I adore one of the grade six pieces, by Telemann on the grade six list this year.
On the saxophone I love playing dramatic and modern style pieces. I am lucky that I adore two of the pieces on the grade six list this year; Altango and Gypsy Songs. I also do jazz saxophone and I love the freedom that improvisation gives me.
I haven't really discussed the prospect of auditioning for chethams with my parents yet. They know that I am passionate about my music but I don't think that they know how serious I am about it. I also know that there is no way they would be able to afford to pay the fees. I know that there is something like a 1 in 1000000 chance of getting in, so I don't want to put myself through the stress of it all unless there was any chance of being successful.
Wow. What a long comment.
You will never know unless you try. It might be a good idea to apply for an advice audition first, when they will give you a good idea of your prospects if you apply for a place. You really need to talk to your parents about this, but remember you will probably be eligible for government help with the fees. Why not send for a prospectus & show it to them, or look at the website together?
You clearly show passion & commitment to your music, which is one of the things they are looking for. They will also be looking for exceptional potential as a performer & a really good ear & aptitude for music. Pupils at Chetham's usually concentrate hard on one instrument for several hours a day & do another for their second study, rather than spreading themselves over several & this may be something you have to think about. Which year would you be thinking of going into?
Good luck if you decide to apply (also to Lizbun!) & remember that, although it's obviously a high standard to get in, they don't have anywhere near a million applicants every year, so your chances are not that slim. I know they take quite a lot of students into the 6th form each year, if that's what you're thinking of.
