I want to learn Jazz, but don't know where to learn since there's just a few teachers in HK (and I know anyone of them)
Is there any books so that I can teach myself?

Hi Isabel,

I'm a jazz piano teacher based in Bristol (UK) and hopefully have a few suggestions for you regarding books...

If you already have a couple of years experience of playing/learning the piano and can read music and understand basic scales and intervals, then I would suggest 2 excellent books written by Prof Dominic Alldis (Jazz Piano Tutor at the Royal Academy of Music). The first book is called "A Classical Approach to Jazz Piano: Exploring Harmony" and the second is "A Classical Approach to Jazz Piano: Improvisation". For more information on these books and a link to online ordering, go to the Jazz Piano Resources page at my web site: http://www.claypiano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/...ources_jazz.htm

If you're just starting out and don't have much experience, then I would recommend a series of tuition books called "Jazz for the Young Pianist" written by the renowned jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson. Again, for more information and links to online ordering, please visit my web site.

For your information, the online sheet music shop I have links to via my web site provides free shipping worldwide for orders over £25, so if you decided to buy these books, you would be able to get them from the UK without incuring any extra postage charges.

Hope this helps!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you'd like any further advice (my email address is on my web site).

The "Jazz Piano Book" by Mark Levine is fairly popular.
I actually bought a copy but haven't really used it much. (I'm currently spending more time learning bass than piano but may switch back)

thai teacher, I suspect something is slightly wrong when you say you're a piano teacher and a piano player but not a pianist - just so you know, you're a pianist if you play the piano, even if you're terrible (which I assume you're not, if you teach).

However, you should be able to sight read your pupils music, otherwise it can cause you serious embaressment and cause a reputation about you to spread
