Hi,
I'm Amber and I'm new to the board. I am due to sit my Grade 5 Theory exam next Wednesday, and I've got a query about the last question (re. chords/cadences).
The question asks the student to show suitable progressions for two cadences in a melody either:
1) By writing I, II etc on the dotted lines
or
2) By writing the notes on the staves.
There are a total of 15 points awarded for this question. However my friend says that if you take the option a) then you don't get as many marks than if you spend the time creating and writing the chords out in full on the staves.
Can anyone tell me if this is true please.
Many thanks,
Amber

No it isn't (as far as I am aware, feel free to correct me)
I just write the chord name ie, I, II, IV or V on the dotted lines, and have always got it right...

you don't get marked down for using either option

The marks have been reduced from 15 to 10.
I always advise my pupils to write the chord name.So long as you understand cadences the question is straightforward.
Unlike the workbook it`s not necessary to write in the chords...(no consecutive 5ths please!) for the exam, although I do so in lessons.

Hi,
Thank you everyone for helping me with this. I think I'll just stick with writing the Roman Numerals! Rhapsodin, I'm fairly sure I'm not your student, unless you're called Tim and live in Sussex! Wish me luck for Wednesday, I've got to the point where I don't think I can study or revise any more than I already have. I'll just be glad now when it's over.
Many thanks again,
Amber

Hi Amber,
Of course - goes without saying - very best of luck on Wedneday!
I'm not called Tim but I am from mid-Sussex.
Take care now,
Rhapsodin.

And me! I always got them right using roman (ie I, II, IV and V) and I keep getting an easy 15/15!
