Does anyone here play this piece? Any tips to share?

I've looked at this piece several times, but never actually got round to learning it.

Bach's Preludes and Fugues aren't normally an issue for me, but I'm finding this prelude quite fiddly.

Also, am I right in thinking that the first semiquaver in bar 61 of the Novello edition is a misprint, and that it should be A natural?

Thanks.

Sorry to be picky, but can you tell me which P and F this is, can't remember the BWV numbers. Is it the C major that starts with the high C and pedal semiquavers?
liebe_klavier
isnt it the one in C minor??? with a fairly long bottom C pedal in the beginning.

It's the Prelude and Fugue in C minor. Novello book 7.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

Apologies, and I'm not much help as its not one I play.

I am hugely enjoying getting to grips with this. The opening paragraph of the prelude is tremendous and a great use of the d-flat chord before the first c minor cadence. There is no pedal reed where I practice which is a shame - at least we have a mixture. However, I am being disciplined and doing the learning on a single stop.

You're right about the missing natural on that 'a' - I've been playing a natural without noticing it was missing.

No tips as such, but the following points come to mind.

I find myself wondering whether to lighten the feel of the triplets at some points in the prelude as otherwise it can be a bit relentless.

When the ascending phrase in minims clashes with the triplet figure (eg. the d minor version) Trevor says not to resound the triplet, but I listened to Herrick and he does.

The ornaments at the end of the fugue subject differ between novello and barenreiter - the latter has a mordant on beat 1 and nothing on beat 3.

I'd be interested in anything you have to say about the piece.

I thought as much.

I think the difficulties I was experiencing with the prelude was down to awkward fingering. I've corrected it now, so it feels much more secure under the fingers.

Thanks all for replying.

A natural in my edition too. This is actually one of my favourites, but I struggle with it in places.
