Due to my dismay in getting little in the way of a reply on my topic in the Viva Voice forum about an SM-58 (microphone tongue.gif), I was wondering if it was simply in the wrong place. Would it be possible to have a music technology board here? Us electric guitarists, digital-pianists, electric violinists etc. need to use equipment on a day to day basis so surely an opportunity to discuss such options would only be logical?

Just a thought, came to me whilst I was on the toilet.

Well, possibly, but then this is the ABRSM forum and so I would think that the forums would only be in things that they offer exams in.

It would be nice indeed.

But remember that the AB is still examining how well people play Telemann (no, not Telecaster...oops) and Mozart whose music was at the top of the charts 200+ years ago.

So you'll probably be waiting until the year 2100 before we see Malmsteen's Opus 5 and the Concerto for Electric Guitar on the AB Syllabub. . .Let's hope they don't set it as sight reading.
Cawww, it'll mean cleaning all the cobwebs off the frets above than 13th.

Ps - What manufacturer, that microphone? Shure? . Dynamic/Electro? Can't remember it from my list of faves but then we all have our faves, dont we? . .Makes me feel like a Neu Mann.
Pps - On the toilet? I'm sure much current pop music is composed there so you aren't alone in your meditations!!!

In fact, I've answered the question myself. . .It's on the edge of my faves!

I don't sing (and the world can be thankful for that though I doubt I sound worse than much of what passes for music in the charts these days) but I've been involved in recordings using this mike - sometimes doing the wrong job but no matter.

It does give a lovely vocal sound doesn't it? Shure have sure got this buttoned up. It'll take a fair bit of rough handling, dropping, etc. Sounded better on a shorter cable (which tells me it was a problem with cable terminations rather than the mike).

Well, let's just say, if I had need of a close vocal dynamic, I would probably buy that very one.

No doubt though, there'll be others who think differently.

Surely the best place to ask a question about an SM-58 microphone would be on the rec.audio.pro usenet newsgroup wouldn't it?

I suppose this highlights what's awkward about the subject of music technology - is it technology or music?

One can define the multitrack recorder as the most powerful musical instrument but is it being seen from a technical recordist's angle or a musician's.

In the UK a few magazines cover music equipment from a technical viewpoint (almost never musically) but almost nothing that covers the same stuff from a musical angle. The electric guitar alone seems to have matured in this respect.

Perhaps it IS time to have a general music technology board - I am never likely to become a studio recordist but I use the equiment. I'd like to hear more about people's experiences with it.
Most dedicated user forums are so cliquy and tend to contain technical know-it-alls (or wannabes) who love to THINK they know all about music but rarely do. . .The role-distancing jargon and mysterious 3-letter acronyms are FAR more important than music!

Besides, high quality recording and ancilliary equipment becomes increasingly available to home musicians allowing them to compose and produce demos in a way that wouldn't have been possible ten years ago. They can now "master" their own CDs (i.e. produce them to the red book standards) and produce small runs on a duplicator.

I was pleased to see the orig. post and I hope others will venture similar views as and when. The fact that the ABRSM doesn't currently have a M.T syllabus does not mean it won't or that it isn't relevant. Many students in these forums will end up making recordings and may welcome a brush with the technology and people who've used it. Some have digital pianos, a few of us, recorders.

Hi there,

Just wanted to reassure all who are interested that your request for a Music Tech forum has been noted and will be considered by the web committee at ABRSM.

If enough people want such a forum, then we'll try it out. So just to help us gauge levels of interest, could any other forums users who would like us to add Music Tech to the forums, please add their name to this list?

Many thanks
