Can anyone tell me what sort of pieces there were in the different periods of music, i cant explain my self well at this moment but i mean, like prelude and stuff, were there any specific types of pieces written as a solo for keyboard instrument, eg harpsichord, piano... etc?

This is very far from complete, but some examples:

Baroque period - Inventions, Preludes and Fugues, also Suites of Dances (eg Bach's French suites)

Classical period - Sonatas (Haydn and Mozart); Form and balance were important.

Romantic period - some shorter descriptive pieces, eg Nocturnes.

Impressionist period - Debussy Preludes. Often paint a picture in sound.

Hope this is ok as a start. It might be useful to try to listen to some of these examples.
