I have taught myself, clarinet, flute and recorder to grade 2 level. I'm extremely musical. Also I am grade 3-4 piano taught privately. I was just wondering can you put yourself in for an ABRSM practical exam without a teacher. (I also know all scales etc up to grade 2 for recorder, flute and clarinet) I just think it's a waste that I may have to have a teacher to participate in an ABRSM exam. I have my teacher put me in for practical piano exams though but dont have a teacher for clarinet, flute and recorder..
Can some one please help me with the answer.

Yes, you can enter yourself, though I think you are supposed to be over 18. It's all on the ABRSM site.

Exams are quite expensive and you don't need to take them all. You could have a couple of lessons for the cost of an exam entry. It can be fun teaching yourself but it would be well worth asking a more experienced player of each instrument to hear you play, just to make sure that you are on the right track with basic techniques. It is quite difficult having to unlearn something later on. Welcome to the forums. wave.gif

You can enter yourself if you are over 18, or can be entered by a parent/guardian.
However I would recommend consulting a teacher first and getting some guidance on your playing. How do you know that you are grade 2 standard on these instruments? You may be able to play the notes, but do you have the instrumental technique that's expected? There's a lot more to it than just blowing down the instrument and putting your fingers in the correct place. In my experience, people who are self-taught on flute tend to have a lot of technical problems which they are unaware of (and I'm sure the same applies to clarinet as well) - you might find that this is okay for grade two, but it will make things much harder later on.

Completely agree with that. I self taught on recorder to grade 4, and entered myself, but then decided to ask my flute teacher to give me a few lessons (he was accompanying me in the exam) and I realised just how much more I needed to improve.

I had a Teacher at my school which played these three instruments where she talked about me doing the grade 2 for clarinet and flute, i think it was because i knew the scales of by heart and my sight reading is very good. So i guess you could say I was taught but this was like 2 lessons XD. Sort of drifted away from the idea now anyway thinking about just doing my piano as thats my first instrument and I have extreme passion it. I should of gave a better explanation of my question, Thank you though, i must admit though my clarinet technique is twenty times better than flute technique. Thanks everyone anyway.

There is a difference between just knowing the notes of a piece and being able to produce all the subtleties in the music - and I would agree with the others, you would still be best at least to let a teacher hear you play and give you guidance. If as you say, you are very musical, then it would be such a shame not to have the benefit of help from a teacher who can show you how to make the most of what you have. It is wonderful being able to let someone else listen to your playing and to get feedback from them - my playing has come on in leaps and bounds since having a teacher, where I had got very stuck before that. Both of my teachers are worth their weight in gold, and then some smile.gif.
