Noxica
I'm Noxica, which arguably is fairly obvious.

I'm 24 (but only just! I don't feel it yet), recently started learning violin again after getting burnt out at the grand old age of 9, and having great fun doing so. Only problem is I don't have anyone to talk to about this marvellous stuff other than my teacher and, lovely as she undoubtedly is (not to mention probably on here somewhere), it'd be nice to have other people to talk to as well smile.gif

Most things you might want to know can be found in my newly-filled-out profile, so let's cut right to the chase:

Hi! wave.gif
katyjay
Hi Noxica, and welcome to the forums.

I see that you've already started exploring and posting, so you'll see that there's a fair few of us violin learners about biggrin.gif

I started violin at the grand old age of 38 and have thoroughly enjoyed it so far biggrin.gif

Noxica
Yeah, I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now, found a load of stuff I wanted to reply to last night so I registered...then my account didn't get validated til this morning. Bah humbug!

Still I'm here now, and look forward to causing merry chaos in the relevant forums (and maybe some not-so-relevant ones) whistling.gif
katyjay
Excellent, merry chaos is what we're about biggrin.gif
Noxica
Well I'm a longstanding mod on another forum, where I've been described as:

An 'experience'
Strangely akin to a whack on the head
A remarkably sparkly piece of the furniture
Incapable of being serious for more than 2 consecutive posts

Can't think why I'm getting the impression i'm going to fit right in here... wink.gif
Miss Ross
Welcome! biggrin.gif

Hi Noxica!

Seeing as you posted on my hello thread saying you're in a pretty similar situation to me, thought I'd post on yours too!

Funny coincidence though, not only are we in pretty similar situations musically, but I think I must be almost exactly the same age as you (turned 24 very, very recently, erm, a few days ago actually...)
Noxica
Whoa....it wasn't the 21st was it?

Because if it is, then we're clearly twins and were fated to meet on here.

Oh yes, I smell fate around here...or it might just be my IKEA scented candle. That's a scented candle from IKEA not smelling of IKEA, although the latter could be interesting as well, and would probably smell nicer.
false_harmonic
Sorry, no, the 15th (less than two weeks is still "a few days" isn't it?!)
Noxica
Yeah, ok...I'll give you that. It's close enough. We can be nearlytwins instead tongue.gif

Just made my first completely serious post on here in another thread... I think I need my vital signs checking blink.gif

All together now... "Aww! It's so tiny!"

I do indeed have a rather awesome lolcat as my profile picture - the only one of my favourites that makes a decent avatar/profile picture etc. Apart from 'I iz a cornflake. Honest.', but that's not as funny as an avatar.

Y'know I'm sure I've got the sheet music for that somewhere... laugh.gif

Yeah....I guess I have posted a lot. In a nutshell, I quit violin aged 9 after being pushed too far too fast, to a chorus of wailing and protests, and thought that was it. Then towards the end of my teens, it started niggling...

I know I was good. A lot of people who knew what they were talking about knew I was good. I was told by one of the most famous teachers in the country that I could go to the top, and it bothered me. It bothered me for years and years and years. Then I got into a band called Turisas, who have a violinist called Olli who, in technical terms, is off the scale. I saw them live in March 2008, and spent most of the set standing at the front looking slightly simple, completely shaken to the core by the sheer speed he was playing at. Although I now (thanks to their forum) know he's a slightly strange, occasionally whiny little git, he started something.

It took me nearly a year, but in November I finally walked into Turner's (Birmingham), bought me a violin, then a few days later went to my first lesson in nearly 15 years.

My feet honestly haven't touched the ground since. I still high on it - it's like being that supersupercrazily enthusiastic 4 year old starting out again every time I think about it. It's magical to me, and given that apart from my teacher (and occasional mild interaction with The Olli) I don't know any violinists, finding a place that a) has friendly violinists about b) has adult learners about and c) shares my sense of humour is, well, rather exciting.

But fear ye not! This 'ere lolcat be 'ere t'stay!

*noms more tea*

Although I may move onto tshirts now. I want one that says 'I can play without looking at my fingers', purely because I always lost the stickers I got with that on.

Now that you're a fully fledged member of the I Love Scales Club and the I Love Theory Club, you might like to know that there's a list of clubs pinned at the top of the Cafe forum. I can recommend the Fingerless Gloves Appreciation Society and something tells me you'd fit very easily into the Old Ladies Traditional Values Association (although you'd need a suitable alter ego - I'm Lavinia aka Lavvy, I got blown up in a gas explosion by two old crows so now I go back and haunt them blink.gif laugh.gif)

I think it's time to start a new club, we haven't had one for a while... biggrin.gif
Noxica
I'm very good at alteregos - I have one on most of the forums I'm active on wink.gif

I could be Freya, the grouchy old Viking lady descended from Thor and prone unleashing the Valkyries on anyone who crosses me? I am, after all, directly descended from the Vikings, although we're still looking into the Thor connection.

As for new clubs...we should have a Music Geeks Club. I'm up for being a founding member of that! Or maybe, given that we love theory and scales, we could start the Teachers Pets Club?

Very pleased to see you merrily throwing yourself into forum life Noxica!

Don't know if you'd be interested, but if you get a chance, have a look at the forum events area (and particularly the 2009 calendar), and see if there's an event near you that you might be interesting in participating in. You'd be made very welcome! smile.gif

Well you see BB2, if you hold a concert there, it means that the alto saxes would be stuck in the even more mangle-munching forest of E major, and they would hate the organiser for that laugh.gif
