I know I should go to a GP, but this is sudden, so im wondering if it is just a cold or something:
To the left of my adams apple, it is uncomfortable when i swallow, almost like there is a little lump there or something :S
Does anyone know about this, and anything that can be done to stop it?

NHS Direct on 0845 4647 would probably be the best place to ask advice, HC!

It could be swollen glands - mumps or another kind of infection. Definitely worth getting it checked out. I had similar discomfort about a year ago, and it turned out to be nothing serious - it's still worth getting it check though.

Or a thyroid cyst? (I've had one for years and it's benign, so nothing needs to be done about it apart from an occasional check-up to make sure it hasn't turned nasty.)

Yes - get it checked out by a decent medical professional if it doesn't go down in a day or two.

I am a nurse and I can't agree more that you should get it checked out if it hasn't disappeared in a couple of days. Chances are that it is unlikely to be anything serious, but nevertheless it could be part of a sore throat or an infected / blocked gland as there are a lot of salivary glands around your mouth area. You may even need antibiotics to clear it up, but you would need to see a Doctor first.
Personally, I am very prone to tonsillits (one year I had 6 bouts and they still refuse to take them out !!!) and a friend at work recommended a certain mouthwash in a triangular shaped bottle that is two colours and you shake it before use - If I get a scratchy throat at night I have a gargle with it and by the morning I feel fine again. I have to say that this year I haven't had any of my usual major problems ( .... yes, of course it could be coincidence of course, but I like to think it has made the difference!).
Good luck and definitely trot along to your GP if it doesn't start to clear up on its own.
