I'm not at all experienced with choosing songs for festivals, I help my youngest son with his singing and he has good choral experience with his school choir and local boys choir. But I don't know if these are wise ideas that we have come up with for festivals in March and May:

Silent Worship - Handel

Linden Lea - Vaughan Williams

I Will Give My Love an Apple - Howells arrangement

He also likes Gavroche's song from Les Mis although my brain has seized up and I can't remember it at the moment.

What do you think? We would make sure he sings in a key that suits his voice, he is more of an alto than a treble really.

I think that I would try to steer clear of love songs for a boy of his age. Linden Lea is good though. Perhaps he would enjoy singing Schubert's Trout or maybe the John Rutter setting of All Things Bright and Beautiful or maybe the setting of the 23rd Psalm by Howard Goodall. Good luck to him.

Oh OK, fair point. The Handel was because there is a specific class for a piece by 'Eric Thiman, Havelock Nelson of Handel' but maybe we will resurrect Where'ere you walk...

The Trout would be fun! Thanks! And I hadn't considered the Goodall although he already knows it from choir, may use it for another festival in May (although that's the Snooty festival not the Friendly one smile.gif)

Many many many years ago (about 50 !) I sang a good treble song which went 'Care flies from the lad that is merry, who's face is as round, as round and as red, as round and as red as a cherry !' I havent a clue who it was by! It was for a local festival . Anyone recognise it ?

Edited, typing errors in original post !

What about Thiman's The Man in the Moon? Or his Path to the Moon?
These are very popular with my young students (and adjudicators).

And why does he like Silent Worship when I thought he'd think it 'soppy'??

Boys are SUCH a mystery to me. I have 5 and I know less now than when I started!

My 9 year old likes Silent Worship too, But I think Path to the Moon is much more age appropriate.
