Does anyone currently use summative assessment techniques in expressive matters. I am researching for an MA on the possibility of encouraging expressivity in flute students of various levels, and the main problem is what counts as improvement in expressive qualities? We the teacher can tell subjectvely, but how would we qualify this to others?

I take it back to the voice, I am a piano teacher and will get the student to sing it first, then we'll sing it together woodenly, then with expression then take it back to the instrument.

Probably not scientific enough for what you're looking for but it works for me and does get the student listening for expression.

Good luck with the MA
