Nov 3 2004, 08:17 AM

yea its called the ocean etude but i never see it named like that in the books, it just has the number and op.

That's because Chopin didn't like names to be given to his pieces, like Schumann. The name "Butterfly" is not given to Op.25 No.9 in books too. Nor is the "Winter Wind" to Op.25 No.11.

That's op10, number 3
And my favourite, (if it's possible to prefer one from another), is op10, number 4.

does anyone know what grade chopins butterfly etude is?

I don't think you could put a grade on it - let's just say that all the etudes are post grade 8

Op.10: 1, 11
Op 25: 6, 11, 12
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd agree, op.10 no.2 should be there as well though - that is horrific
And I'd lose op. 25 no.12 and op.10 no. 11
I guess which one person finds hardest will be different from another, though, and it's really a personal things. If you're really comfortable with double notes, then op. 25 no.6 might not be a problem (although that's unlikely

)

The black key etude has to be delicate and fast....

The easiest etude is Op. 25 No. 2, in fact it's usually not included in diploma examinations along with the other etudes.
By the way, would anyone please give me a list of nicknames for the Chopin etudes?

Dec 23 2004, 02:56 PM
I think the easiest is Op.10 No.3. Well, different people, different difficulties.
Op.10 No.3 "Tristesse"
Op.10 No.5 "Black Key"
Op.10 No.12 "Revolutionary"
Op.25 No.1 "Aeolian Harp"
Op.25 No.5 "Wrong Note"
Op.25 No.7 "Cello"
Op.25 No.9 "Butterfly"
Op.25 No.10 "Octave"
Op.25 No.11 "Winter Wind"
Op.25 No.12 "Ocean"

Umm....actually, I use 1 5 1 5 for that pattern (I think I've broken the legato rule) and nobody gets angry but maybe you need to do some technical exercises to strengthen it...

I use 1 3 5-2 4-1 for them. I don't think there is any other better alternative.

Well, I didn't mention a specific technical exercises but there are a lot of boring studies-only technical but not musical from Czerny and Hanon. I think Czerny's Op. 740 is the most advanced and Hanon's The Virtuoso Pianist is good, too. They're more general, I think
