Did they laugh then??
Yep...

I'd wait a few moments, and if she did not get up and carry on then obviously I would go to check if she was hurt, and help if I could. I am guessing that these workmen laughed, and that you are (rightly) upset by it.
So chivalry is still alive!

They did laugh, but I'm not upset really, just bemused.

I would always rush to a lady in distress (of any age !).
I'm glad to hear it!

But then if I was the person that fell I'd laugh at myself too so I probably wouldn't mind them laughing.
To be honest, I would normally laugh too but it really did hurt this time.

I've never forgotten the reaction of a boyfriend of mine to my falling in the river during a punt party. Not only did he laugh, but he took a photo of me in the river before others helped me out! I was really mad with him at the time, but funnily enough, later I appreciated having the photo, so perhaps he did the right thing after all.
Back on topic, I think you'd have had a much better chance of being helped if there'd been only 3 or 4 workmen. With a group of 20, no-one would want to risk being teased for the rest of the day for going forward.

Aha, I'll remember that for next time!
