Do teachers normally use adjustable bench when they are teaching?
Or one bench height suits all?
If you are using adjustable bench while teaching your students, do you encounter any inconvenience when students go for exam when no adjustable bench is provided in the examination centre?
Are we allow to bring in our portable bench or cushions to adjust to comfortable position for the candidates?

Yes, I agree, adjustable is essential. I have two - one rather low one which is fixed height, and one which adjusts - and even so I have two students who are at the limits of the range - the small pupil would really be better with a book to sit on but doesn't like it. He's not particularly short in fact - just rather short-waisted.
I would expect exam centre stools to be adjustable too.
There was a discussion I think a while ago on the piano forum on this topic - you might like to do a search.

Yes, I agree that an adjustable stool would be best for optimum comfort and performance. But practicalities sometimes seem to dictate otherwise. My own piano stool isn't adjustable; neither is my piano teacher's or the one at the exam centre. In fact, I don't recall ever having come across one which does adjust at at exam centre.
Carnival, I am sure you could take a cushion or two if necessary. For your own portable stool, it might be best to check with the exam centre.

I don't have an adjustable stool, but a very nice Clavinova stool that came with my piano. I find it works well for most students, although I have used a cushion for very young students and I also have a chair in the room that could be used for tall students.
I'm short myself, so it's fine for me - I have several teenage students who are taller than me!

Absolutely agree that you must use an adjustable stool (there's some very reasonably priced ones on Ebay - I just got a new one from Pianos4u on there and it's lovely!). It's so important to be at the right sitting position, and I also use a footstool for the little ones so their feet can reach the floor, and stress to the parents they need to accommodate this - even if they just use a thick telephone book! As far as I'm aware, all the exam boards insist that there's an adjustable stool at the centre too, and if there wasn't, I'd take a portable one with me. Incidentally, I've just returned home from a night of Festivals, where the adjudicator praised my pupils for adjusting the stool before they played, as she commented that it's so important to be sat at the correct position. Some of the competitors didn't bother, and you could really tell by the angle of their wrists they were at the wrong height!

Thanks all for the replies.
I have just got in touch with the taubman technique, and i was told to adjust my bench when i play.
So likewise, i have to adjust my students' bench height accordingly, but not too sure if this gonna affect my students' performance during exam if they got use to the higher bench height and they don't get adjustable bench during exam.
I say that because after i had adjusted my new bench height for two weeks, then i was in shock how low i was previously sitting when i tried the old bench height.
That's why i wasd pondering whether is it a good idea to bring our own stool or cushions for exam....
