What sort of baby fish are they? Will you need a new and bigger tank when they grow up and leave home? Baby anythings are lovely.

They are baby platties. They are so tiny I don't think they'll show on a picture too easily (if I could figure how to post one). Ones so tiny - only a couple of millimetres or so long. It's just a fry. The biggest is about the size of a small neon tetra already. Spotted 3 in there but they are hiding well in a big plant mass that floats at the top.

I already have a nice big tank - the biggest that'll fit in my house anyway. Got it 2nd hand last year and it's just the one I really wanted but over £400 in the shops.

BTW how do I do pictures if i don't have them on a website? can I upload one straight from my computer's gallery?

I'm hoping the little fry will not be a food source for the larger fish BUT apparently these fish CAN have about 70fry at a time so natural culling is probably the best option. Given that last time I spotted 2 at about this size they survived I'm hopeful. They survived the fry stage at least befor i even spotted them. This time there's 3!!!!!! (at least)

You can buy little cage things that sit in the water and give them a safe haven from the other fish. They're so cute aren't they?

Is that what you kids are calling it these days?... rolleyes.gif

I've refused to have any platties or guppies for years now as you tend to get overrun with them and then you struggle to find homes for them and if you have to cull them it isn't nice. (Unless you put a couple of Firemouth or Convict cichlids in the tank which helps to keep the population explosion under control).

I only allow planned breeding now (Discus, Angelfish and Corydoras catfish) as you soon become pushed for space if you're not careful.

Wow!! We have fish too, but they never breed... Maybe they're both male... It's kind of hard to check tongue.gif

We moved our two goldfish out into our pond about 5 ago, and added to them, and about two years later we had babies! (fish, that is). It was so exciting and it still is, so good luck with yours smile.gif

Congrats biggrin.gif
We had babies a while back - Cloud Stream Minnows, and they were tiny when we first noticed them, just tiny specks of light. I think maybe four or five survived, even though we had a goldfish in there when they were growing, but then it just seemed to completely ignore the smaller fish.

How sweet!

I think it is best to separate the little ones from the grown fish, to increase their chances of survival.

I have had some swordtail eat their own young before. That was even before I discovered that the babies were there...

It went like this:

"Hmm, what are they eating? Did someone feed them?"
"Hey no, they are eating shrimps!"
"No no, the female's tummy is gone. And they are eating their own babies!"
"Wow, there are babies all over!"

Then there was a frenzy trying to remove the grown fish from the tank... smile.gif

Congratulations! Our catfish keep trying but the big yellow snails always eat the eggs:-(
But the tank can't really accommodate any more fish so maybe that's not such a bad thing...

If you want to protect little ones until they can survive safely with the adults then you can buy a nursery tank, a small slatted tank which will fit into a corner of your existing tank. They will be fine there.

Yeah Thanks all. I have one of those small tank thingies that sit inside the main tank. Problem would be getting the littlies out. Last time I saw one dart past then didn't see it again for weeks. Then doing some routine tank maintainance discovered there were actually 2!!! And big enough to come out into the open. This time there's still definitely 1 little red one but as for the other 2 tinies, they are either really good at hiding or they've become food.... As someone said the tank can be overun very easily and I have nowhere else to put them so I think letting nature do it's thing in there is the best. Not to sound callous or anything but the tank's fairly well stocked. I do hope they make it though!!!!
